2017+ A8 Overheating (Non-track use)
Hey guys,
This is my first post here. I'm currently saving up for a C7 Z06. I think I've decided I'd like to get a 2017+. It looks like 2018 and 2019 both have some good upgrades but the important cooling upgrades came in 2017. I'm still undecided between the A8 and M7. I've read through a ton of those threads here and won't bother everyone with another one.
I think the biggest factor for me would be possible overheating. I know most people say this is only an issue on the race track, but I believe I read a post on here where a guy said his 2017 A8 overheated and went in to limp mode in stop and go traffic. Obviously any car could overheat in stop and go traffic if there was something wrong with it, but is this something that would be likely to happen with an A8?
The fact the M7 got the additional radiator in 2017 makes me think it would be less likely to have overheating issues than the A8. Again, I'm not going to be taking this car on a racetrack. It's possible I'd give a 1/4 mile a shot at some point, but that would likely be it.

It would be near impossible to overheat even a 2015 car on the street. Maybe if you were running from the cops and driving on the street like it was a race track. Otherwise you're not going to have an issue. The 2017+ cars have better cooling with the 2019 8 speed automatic getting a larger radiator to assist with cooling the transmission. The manual cars did not get a bigger radiator as it is not needed. They did get an additional aux cooler though that helps.
Anyhow, you won't have an issue. If someone did indeed overheat in stop and go traffic, they had an outstanding issue with their coolant system somewhere. Don't get hung up on some of the things you read on here and buy the 2017+ simply for the better supercharger cooling. The 2017+ cars keep more power with multiple pulls vs the 2015-2016 due to the aux cooler addition and the taller lid with tilted bricks.

I'd get a newer one just because, but my 2016 never had an issue on the street, and I can be more than a spirited driver. A8

This past summer I took a 1500 mile weekend drive in my 17 Z from SF Bay Area to Tacoma WA. From Redding up through the Siskiyous, I was cruising 75-80 while keeping an eye on the temp(maybe 210 on the hard climbs). When I crossed the Oregon border it was 108 deg F all the way to Portland. The coolant temp was under 200 and oil temp was about 10 deg more. AC on all the way and I got 23-24mpg going 10-15 over the limit. On a 70 degree day, you’ll see coolant temp in the 175-180.

NO, it isn't something that is likely to happen with any C7 Z06. You have to be making lots of power at high rpm at Wide Open Throttle for several minutes to get close to overheating the A8. Since little power is being produced when the engine is idling or moving the car at 5 to 20 mph Stop and Go traffic isn't especially stressful as long as the cooling system is in good shape.

The Aux Radiator doesn't do much cooling at idle or low speeds. There is no fan drawing air through the Aux Radiator which lies horizontally on the bottom of the radiator duct in front of the SC HX. The movement of the car is what forces air downward through the Aux Radiator at higher speeds thus providing added cooling capacity.
