Default Defective K&N oil filter pic

I've changed oil for 45 years and never bought a defective filter. Till this time. Never used K&N before. Never will again. Thought it needed to be tightened but it's leaking at the nut seal. Can't find PF64s. Probably will buy a Wix.

Go with a Mobil 1 M-113 best filter out there.

Wix is one of the most respected filters out there, among hardcore motorheads.

Mobil M1-113 or Fram Ultra Synthetic XG10060. Wix is highly over-rated on my opinion; after having numerous seal issues years back I stopped purchasing them and haven't looked back.

Default K&n

I also purchased a defective K&N air filter. The thing would not seal in the stock housing, it was a little too long. I contacted K&N and they did nothing for me. So I wasted $70 on it, however discover the BMS filter and am extremely happy with that, much better performance as well!

I think the K&N is made by the same company that makes the Mobil-1 filters....except for the welded-on nut on the K&N that is leaking.......

Definitely keep an eye on it. I changed my oil at 500 miles before a 700 mile road trip and found it leaking when I got home. Not good.

I have a M1-113 Mobile and the kn. Look totally different at the filter end.

Wix or Amsoil oil filters for me.

The Wix:57060XP is their synthetic media filter.

I'm not sure about the K&N oil filters anymore, but I do know the M1-113 is still made in the USA.

I think Purolator invented the oil filter, this new all synthetic filter for the C7 is their best yet.

I now use this oil because it kicked a$$ (withstood heat better) in an oil test against Mobil and many other top rated brands, by the way Mobil 1 usually finishes in the top two or three in every oil test. The QS "Full Synthetic" 5 quart bottle is now green in color. I believe QS & Penn. have merged.

I've been using K&N for a lot of years on a lot of cars and have never had a problem. I suppose it's possible they changed some equipment and it's burning through the case. I'll keep an eye on them, thanks.

As noted above, it's hard to imagine a spot weld leaking.

Are you certain it's not just from the gasket seal leaking down across the outside of the filter and collecting inside the hollow the nut cap (low point)? The oil color discoloration on the filter label makes me think this might be your issue, not the cap lug itself?

Also looks like you tightened it on with a wrench from the wrench/socket marks on the hex nut (reference paint chips on the CW direction corners).

Could have crushed the seal. I've always stuck with just hand tight (as tight as you can get it by hand) as all you should ever torque a new filter to. Nut is there to aid removal more than anything...but is probably tempting to crank on.

Google K&N oil filter leaks.

Very certain it was not the gasket. In 45 years of changing oil filters I've never crushed a gasket, left an extra gasket on from the previous filter or had one leak.....until now.

The Z06 oil filter actually requires a lot of torque. I think the owners manual specifies like 22 ft. lbs. or maybe 45? Anyway - I use he K&N filter - if I hand tighten it will leak around the seal.
