So bummed!
I parked my vette and didn't put it in gear or engage the parking break. I came out and found the car had rolled back 50 yards into a wood post outside a shop. UGH! Need to replace rear bumper and passenger-side quarter panel. And I don't even have 700 miles on it!
Today is my birthday. It is not a happy one!

That's what happens when a dealer sells a 650 horsepower car to a 94 year old.
Happy birthday !!!!!!!! May you still be around for your 95th.

Feel for ya..Happened to me a while back in my Toyota P/U..Had to get a new bumper after it hit a block wall, could have been a lot worse if it rolled down the street.
I did have the brake on but it let go/

in to a yard and had stopped perfectly along side of a house a block away. I quickly got in the truck and drove it back home.
Could have done some serious damage but I was lucky it missed everything and the house on the way.

The nice thing about these kinds of incidents is you get over the 'new car syndrome'. I was babying mine to death. Then I plowed into an armadillo and had to replace the carbon fiber splitter. Still adore the car but i'm over the 'it needs to be perfect' stuff now.

What a drag.
There's been a couple of times I parked and flipped up the parking brake and it didn't engage. I now make sure I see the nice orange light come on.

I hate the electronic parking brake! I have pulled the button and had it not engage on more than one occasion. I make sure the light is on before getting out of the car but it is much more effort than the tried and true hand brake you can just pull. Also makes it much more annoying when glancing inside the car to see if the brake is on or not.

A friend of mine asked me to drive his car a bit while he was out of town many years ago.
I took it for a spin, pulled up in front of my house, pulled the hand brake to full extension, and put the car in gear. Went inside, a few hours later I came out and thought it had been stolen, totally gone.
Looked off to the side and it was sitting in my neighbors yard. Hadn't hit anything.
When I got down to it, the brake was still set, but obviously it wasn't in gear.
No idea if someone tried to lift it, or if it just popped out of gear (which I think is likely what happened.)
I don't trust either method now, every time I leave my car on a hill I am concerned it is going to try rolling away.

that sucks.take the insurance check and the car and trade it for a new one.you will be much better off down the road.

Thanks for your comments everyone. It definitely could have been a lot worse! I'm over it now and just going through the initial process to get it repaired. I'm mostly bummed that I won't be able to cruise around with the top down while we are getting this amazing weather in the Pacific Northwest!

Glad you're getting it repaired, and thankfully nobody was behind it when it rolled backwards. Saw Star Trek this past weekend, and couldn't help but think about the similar but freak accident that took Anton Yelchin's life. If anyone drives long enough they'll have stuff like this happen to them, but many won't admit to it on a forum.

wrong move. you have a new car with a Carfax accident and diminished value.by not trading it with insurance check for a new one you just lost a ton of money.i know how it works and that is the best move for anyone with a new car and accident.most people do not understand how things like this work because it does not normally happen to them.they follow what they think they should do,but it is not the best move.
