Default Plug-in module that auto-starts the PDR with the engine

I had this in a vendor's thread and pulled it out because I didn't want to hijack their thread, but:

Would there be any interest in a little plug you stick in the ALDL port that did the following:

- Allowed you to have the PDR start recording every time the car is started to use it as a dash cam

I'm a software guy, so I can sit down with VehicleSpy3 and find out the PIDs required to do it, but no one wants to keep a laptop in their car, so its the "reduction to practice" of putting hardware in a little ALDL module that is beyond me, but the Dash Logic guys have done it, as have the Top Down Tech people for their Window Valet.

Seems simply, I just don't know the right people to talk to! Anyone here have hardware experience in that arena?

Is there any interest in such a thing?

I'd get one of there was a pass through so I can also use my SAVVY for V1.

I would buy one yesterday if the hack included at least one of the backup cameras recording as well on a loop, not just the front facing PDR one. That way one has true protection in case of an accident even if the culprit came at us Greek style.

The key would be to be able to easily switch between dash cam functionality to full PDR functionality.

I think the hack would be easier (and more useful) if one tapped into the front and rear parking cameras and adding an external recording device as opposed to trying to integrate the PDR into it just because the recording device is already there.

I know zero about coding or about anything I just talked about ... I prolly should have prefaced with this.

I can help on the hardware side if you can get the PIDs.

That is just inside my wheelhouse.

Question is, what would people pay for this convenience? If the R&D cost can't be recovered or would require amoritazion over too few people to be viable, I'd not be able to help. My typical designs usually cost about 8k. I also have my own pick n place machine for making small runs.

Default I'll take a stab at it

$99 to 149? If you could get front and rear in a loop. Beauty is you have almost 100k potential customers already out there and adding 30k+ per year. Even less than 1% of this population is a big number. This would be without memory so the end user would have to buy an SD card. Interesting idea. I'd probably buy one.

I like the idea - especially if it included turning on the M7 Active Rev Matching every time I started the car!!

I would be interested in such a device as long as the plug had pass through so my window valet still worked as well. Or combine both functions into one module.

What does Window valet still do that the cars do not on their own?

Roll the windows up or down with the remote.

Really? My 2003 M3 does that, so I figured all cars do it (I do it along with the top on the current car and so have never tried it separate). Normally you press and hold the lock or unlock button. I'm surprised they never added that as a normal feature!

I'd be interested.

And another idea. I don't know GM software, but I'll put it out there. As you know, certain '14 & '15 have very tight bodies and their rear hatches are difficult to close. Just like the Window Valet can 'crack' open the windows from the fob, if the hatch opening could be captured, cracking the windows would be a super feature. And if the hatch being closed is available, then closing the cracked windows would also be great.

I would be interested in this as well. Especially if a method was found to capture video from front and rear for potential accidents or vandalism. I've been wondering what would be best way to do 360 degree video surveillance.
