Engine Build Experience for Z06 Won't be Available for All
It looks like the idea of being able to participate in the engine build for that new Z06 you ordered isn’t guaranteed even if you do have the extra cash.
Unlike the previous model, all consumers buying the new Z06 won’t be able to participate in Chevy’s build-your-own engine experience for the car when production revs up in 2015, according to an Edmunds.com report. Chalk it up to the fact that the powertrain for the new Z06 is now being built at the Kentucky plant in Bowling Green and the GM engine plant in Tonawanda, NY.

So much of the engine building is done with preassembled components and machines that torque all the headbolts at the same time. For anyone who actually has built and engine, the previous ls7 builds were at best a game of pretend. Not my intention to make anyone feel bad...but it was a lot of money for a Disney land ride in my opinion.

Its laziness that GM can't simply make sure that people who want the experience can have their engines built in BG. Its not like they have to make new shipments or buy special parts. Some are built in BG and some in NY. So when a customer wants to help build just tag that order for BG. Its a simple flag in a computer GM and for $5800, I think you spend the extra muscle twitch to click the mouse to make this happen.

At the Bash in April the question was asked which LT4s would be built in Tonawanda and which would be built by the PBC in Bowling Green. It had not been decided yet at that time. Speculation then was that automatic trans LT4s would be from Tonawanda and manual trans engines built by the PBC. Or maybe engines destined for the Z07 option would be built by the PBC.
It was premature for someone at Chevy to comment at all until the final details were official. It would be pretty likely at least that a manual trans Z07 engine would be handbuilt at the PBC and would be eligible for the $5800 customer build option.

I really don't care who builds it I just want one but to those that like that sort of thing I guess it's unfortunate they won't have that choice to participate in the build.

Does anyone here really think GM is going to say no to a $5000+ option that probably has an 80% margin for the handful of people that might want to do this? It's as simple as vectoring that engine build order to BG. Amazing what people publish as fact with little to no understanding of the process. (Not you guys here, the supposed journalist who published the story)

I have heard from insiders that the customer build option will be alive and well. Much ado about nothing here......
