Default Chevy Considering Giving the Z06 the "X" Treatment

For those hardcore track enthusiasts, some good news.

"With the 2015 Corvette Z06 now out in the open, Chevy engineers are already busy on a more extreme Vette. Corvette product manager Harlan Charles told us at this year’s Detroit auto show that his team wants to put the Corvette Z06X, a concept shown at SEMA in 2010, to production."

OK, let's hear the chorus, "98% of Corvette drivers never drive on the track so they'll never build a car like that."

They did it with the Camaro Z28 why not with the new Z.

if they did it for a Camaro, they will certainly do it for the Corvette.

That would be awesome, Ferrari cut 200 lbs with the 458 Speciale so there is fat to cut from the Z.

Mine already weighs in at 2950 with 14 inch brembos, 650 hp na, track ready cooling systems, full interior with air cond. Just missing the aero aids the new one will have. Oh and it was produced in 2002. It even has a steel frame...go figure. It will be expensive if they produce a stripped z06...look at the z28. If only GM would build a di ls7 stripped car. Now that would be a track car.

It seems like the people who normally ridicule this idea are staying strangely silent.

I think it's a great idea. It would be very interesting to see where they can cut weight. They're already putting a carbon torque tube in the Z06. Next step would be to ditch the AFM so the exhaust and clutch can be lighter. After that they'd have to strip the stereo and possibly the AC system (not sure they'd ditch the AC). If it's not street legal they could do away with the airbags and use polycarbonate windows etc. It really all depends on if they intend for this to be a street legal car or not.

I'd also think they'd offer the Z/28's racy spool-valve dampers for ultimate no compromise performance over the mag shocks.

??? This is the first I've heard of the Z-28 having some different damper technology. Can you elaborate?

They can take some good weight from the interior also taking away the carpets, replacing leather with Alcantara that is lighter, putting CF seats frames, thinner glass, manual adjusted seats instead of electric, sound deadning material etc.

The 458 Speciale even has a rear Lexan screen.

Talked about in Leno's Garage on the Z/28.

Multimatic monotube shocks with F1-style spool valves

The Z06-X was not equal to a Z-28. Not even close.

The Z06-X was a gutted, fully caged, race car. Don't start dreaming of driving that on the street.

The more I learn about this new Z28, the more I wonder who had dirty pictures of whom for GM to approve building such a beast....

True, but do you really think they would develop a non street legal car? Remember, the Camaro also came out with the SSX concept side by side with the Z06X. My thought has always been that the Z/28 was the production car inspired by that concept.

Most people don't get it and can't understand how they can sell this car, at a very low volume for a limited amount of years, for $75k while keeping the C7 Z06 near the same price levels as the previous generation. It really is apples to oranges.

The C7 Z06 supposed will weigh 3500ish lbs. The Z28 is 3728 lbs. Im leaning towards a Z28 if I cant mentally get over buying a Camaro for $75k, lol. I do think it would be a real collector car 20yrs from now.
