So what's the need or supposed desire for each millisecond saved on a PDK downshift?

I'm sure the new GM A8 c7 Z06 kicks the crap out of anything in its market segment on the track and it's easy to drive at the limits as well.

None on the track. You don't loose any time on the downshifts.

The issue I can see on-track is any delay from the time the paddle is engaged to when the transmission actually rev matches and downshifts to the next gear.
Obviously, on-track you'd want the downshift to be pretty much right now, or when you'd want it. However, that parameter should simply be a matter of programming. From what I've read, the 8L90's TCM analyzes and executes commands 160 times per second, so it seems logical that they can eliminate any paddle-to-actual-gear-change delay, either upshifting or downshifting.

What is an auto trans? It IS a "DCT"...but rather than only two clutches and gear switchers, all the gears are always engaged and it has (in this case) several clutches. No reason why an auto can't be designed (calibrated) to shift lightning fast. GM was making fluid coupled "DCT" trans's back in the 60's with the Powerglide. I'm just surprised that they have been so slow to market the technology in this fashion, rather than as "an automatic transmission". Opportunity lost, IMO.

Since it has 5 clutches, they should call it a 5 clutch trans. Or quin clutch trans.

Something. While other companies have capitalized on the marketing "technobuzz" of the term dual clutch transmission, GM has basically had that tech for 60 years....but just hasn't spun it or capitalized on it in this manor.

This was the biggest issue I had with my GXP when driving it on the track. It simply took too long to shift after I had commanded it to. If they have corrected this, I could easily see myself picking the auto over a manual.

Do you know the ratios for the manual?

GM hasn't released the Z06 TR 6070 ratios yet but if I were a betting man, I would look for ratios very similar to the C6ZR1:

1st: 2.29
2nd: 1.61
3rd: 1.21
4th: 1.00
5th: .81
6th: .67

7th will obviously be another overdrive gear like the base/Z51 models...I'm going to guess somewhere around .50.

I doubt there are many here that remember the 'fluid drive' of the forties. Dad's old dodge had this.

Here is a side note. I would be willing to bet that the new A8 can stack down shifts.
