It overheated again in a drive thru, after taking my granddaughter home (750 miles round trip), all the bells and whistles again. I took video of the dash gauges and the engine running without the fan turning. Took it to my dealer, they ran codes. .nothing stored. My service rep said he doubted the insurance would pay, not having codes. I gave him my videos to share and mentioned a fan assembly would be cheaper than an engine. He called me back yesterday and said Allstate is allowing that claim, plus fixing my roof that's making a cracking noise (service #15-NA-016) when it's warm outside.
I was never a fan, pardon the pun, of extended warranties, but after my last 2015 needing 8 hours labor plus parts to replace my HUD, then this experience, maybe changing my outlook.
Will update after all is complete, I understand there is a backlog on the 600 watt fan... I wonder why?

Sounds awesome! If they can get the fan switched, you'll not have the issue again.

The fan’s $197 and maybe an hour of your time if you have no mechanical ability whatsoever. To each his own but I certainly wouldn’t go through all the fighting, arguing, stress, and cost of an extended warranty for that. I am not a fan of extended warranties but to each his own.

Update: Temperature spike has not repeated. The fan replacement appears to still be working properly.

As a follow up. I have NOT had a repeat of the temperature spike since I replaced the fan and controller.

I've been having the exact same issue with my 2014 M7 non-Z51. After a long trip temps spike up to 260 and the fan does NOT turn on at all. Shutting the car off and turning it back on will get the fan to finally kick on. Pretty sure there's a bad sensor or connector on 2014s that causes this issue since I've seen a lot of people saying replacing the fan fixes this issue of the fan not turning on.

After having 2 more overheating issues I bought the fan and installed it yesterday. RockAuto has the ACDELCO 1581914 for $200 which is just the ACDelco # for the Z06 GM part. This took way longer than it should have though because the latch on the electric connector snapped off... This made it impossible to detach the connector while the fan was in still. I had to unbolt the fan and partially lift it up and then pull the connector up some so I could see the latch point to pop it manually. There's a tiny bump latch I had to push a very small flat head under to slightly lift to get it to come off.

We were exploring the possible causes of the problem. It was not what caused the overheating to occur. The replacement of the fan and the control module that is part of the fan corrected the overheating problem.

@eboggs_jkvl and others in this thread, thank you for a very informative thread. My '14 has overheated twice, both times after long highway drives followed by idling. I just replaced the fan with the Z06 fan and hope it never happens again.

Sounds like you hit the problem with a fix.

Theres something with the 2014's that have this problem and no fix has been released for it up to this point. Also to clarify, your nav update had nothing to do with it. Have you had your dash computer reboot suddenly while you are at speed? Mine has done that too a couple times. Its thing like that which are the reasons they say "don't buy the first year of a redesigned car!" Lol

I had a fan go in my other race vehicle and had to buy new dual fans. Electric fans are scary since you don't know they quit till your water temp is out of site.

We wired 2 LED lights inside that come on in blue every time either fan comes on. Best move I ever made for piece of mind !!

Default Issue today

Hi everyone, just wanted to thank you all for the discussion on this thread.

I recently got a 2014 C7 and it has been working great but today I was hit with this overheating issue while in a stop and go traffic (outside temps at mid 70s).

Found a place to get the Z06 fan to replace and it should arrive later this week for the swap.

Appreciate you all keeping the thread updated so it was easier to narrow down the actual issue.
