What does the dealer service tech use as the C7 diagnostic scanner equivalent to the C5/6 Tech2?

All GM cars built after 2010 are now on a Global platform that use the GDS system which is actually good for little guys. Now independent shops and car enthusiast can purchase a J2534 tool for about $500 and subscribe to the GM website for 3 days at $57 and download the software to read all 22 or so on board computer systems. It is much cheaper than the old way of purchasing a Tech 2 with the Candi and software for 3-5k. You can even upload factory updates for your car without having to go to the dealer for programming. Those updates can be done by subscribing to the SPS system for 2 days at $55. The GDS requires a lap top computer and J2534 dongle connected to the OBDII connector and you are ready to go.

I have a Tech2 with adapters and CANDI interface for my C5 but wanted to make sure I have the same capability with my C7.

Just a side note, with the GDS software you can also verify the Vitesse throttle controller does not set any codes in ANY module or record ANY event changes. The Vitesse is external hardware to all computer systems and will not void a warranty since no changes are made. I have one in my A8 Z06 and have all ready verified it. BTW it works great too, like yours in your other posts.

I'm hesitant to try. I'm concerned PCM damage could result similar to fried units using tuning software. I realize this is different but my C7 is my ride to work and I'm conservative with it compared to my other cars.

It is not compatible and will not read modules. Without getting too complicated, it is a different communication network over the bus lines in the OBDII connector. The Tech2 was slowly phased out from 2010 until 2014 when everything went to GDS2 and the MDI (multiple diagnostic interface) module. The MDI is a pass-through device with wifi card to link the pc to internet connection and then download software from the GM website.

It is much easier to buy the J2534 pass-through device if you are just interested in your car line than to buy a MDI which has more bells and whistles. A lap top connected to an internet connection and the J2534 dongle interface will do everything a dealer can do. A few dealers even use the J2534 dongle rather than a MDI due to easier hook up and portability.

I have an MDIand laptop,ive used a tech2 on 2013 Camaros-2015 gmc duramax trucks,just haven't had a 2015 vette in the shop,,it reads those fine

a tech2 can be used as a pass-thru device too

If the Tech2 can be used as a pass-through, what capability does that give it compared to the MDI/laptop setup? Is it read-only for current module configs or can it be used to make the same diag/updates MDI can?

If you just want to see parameters and read and clear codes, get a Bluetooth adapter and the Torque app on your phone...

just to see data/see codes a tech2 is 5x faster then getting out a computer/mdi/hooking up everything,,when I can just plug in the tech2 and start reading things

but,a MDI/laptop it 2-3x faster for programming
a MDI is only a pass-thru device

You need to sign up and pay for a minimum 3 day version of GDS2 in order to download any information pertaining to your car via the VIN and have a pass-through tool either the MDI or J2534 dongle connected to the OBDII connector.

Last time I checked about a month ago, I did not see an new PCM updates for 2016 Z06. There are minor updates for other modules that may have issues with HVAC and the radio module that may have an occasional black screen. Not worth installing updates unless you have a problem. I can't go back and check unless I subscribe again for 3 days and $57.00

It will give you codes and let you clear them. The data list still read , but not to trusted all the time. I've done this on all kinds of gm cars and trucks at work when I don't feel like using gds.

I use the ELM 327 bluetooth adapter- around 10 bucks- with the Torque app. can see data and clear codes if needed. all this for under 20 bucks.
