Default Hydraulic Clutch Fluid

I was perusing the online owners manual in regards to recommended clutch fluid... I already knew it took Dot 4 brake fluid, however, it gives a specific gm part number to use in the states and Canada, Eh! My dilemma is my ongoing shifter issue I first want to try to resolve changing out the fluid first. The simple question I have is... Has anyone used any other fluid other than the recommended gm part number?

I use DOT 4 (Prestone or similar) in mine for street use (clutch & brakes)

For higher stress/temperature applications such as HPDE, consider MOTUL RBF 600 or Castrol SRF.

I appreciate the reply. Think it'll hurt to mix fluids? Example... Extract all the fluid out I can using the turkey baster method, then refill with "x" fluid.

GM fluid comes in tiny bottles at a very expensive price tag, you can get a quart of Dot 4 for around the same price.

You shouldn't worry about mixing fluids they are all compatible, just buy a quality brand Prestone dot 3 and 4, is what I buy

Yeah, I called the GM parts department as asked for their clutch fluid... 16ozs of Dot 4 is $17 wholesale. I just wanted to make sure it isn't a "specific" fluid and not regular Dot 4 brake fluid. Thanks for your reply.

I'm pretty sure GM actually recommends DOT 3 brake fluid for street use (for the brakes), and DOT 4 for the clutch.

On the C5/C6 GM recommended Super DOT4 Brake Fluid for the clutch. The only Super DOT4 fluid on the market is from Pentosin. You can buy it on Amazon. A few auto parts stores sell it as well. From what I can tell it has a lower viscosity as well as the DOT4 temp range. You can view the spec sheet here: http://www.pentosin.net/specsheets/P...SuperDot_4.pdf

Now THAT is some valuable info... I very much appreciate you passing it along. I'm wanting to make sure I use as close to GM spec as possible so I don't cross contaminate the dissimilar fluids. I know, prolly too **** about this simple issue, just don't want to make an error that causes trouble down the road. Thank you again for the Info.

The clutch reservoir only holds about 2 oz., so you can get multiple changes even with the GM 16 oz bottle.. I went ahead and just bought the GM fluid. (but my dealer does give me a discount, so I paid $6.39)

How often do you change yours out?

Every 6 months or so.. unless it looks extra dark.
I have found that the clutch fluid stays clean if you avoid high RPM shifts that create excessive clutch dust in the bell housing.

TEXHAWK0, The key word here is "if" I change mine every 3000 miles or so. I use the GM dot4 and I change it 6-7 times until it comes clean. I don't like reusing a open container of brake fluid, so when I change the clutch fluid I'll use the whole container. (16 oz)

Counter intuitive for my needs... I tend to be a very high rpm shifter most of the time. I'd prolly need to change mine out more than that. My car has 15k on it right now, so I think it should've already been done a couple of times... Maybe this weekend.

Do you just change it just because, or is it usually dirty by then?

C7BB, By 3000 miles the fluid is some what dirty so that's when I change it. I use the "Ranger" method. It's fast and easy so that's where I place it on my PM schedule.
