Default aFe Cold Air Intake - appendix size?

I am considering the aFe Cold Air Intake - I was just curious what the appendix (with the vent tubes) on the side does and why it is so much smaller than on the stock air box.

Much appreciated!

Those are normally referred to as Helmholtz chambers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmholtz_resonance
Their primary purpose is to reduce Ressonances and noise in the intake system.

Having the AFE on my car I do not see a significant difference in the AFE smaller chamber..Sure there is a bit more intake sound as you would expect, but pretty transparent in normal Day to day.
