C7 Z51 arrived, oil everywhere. How screwed am I?
Waited about a month to get my 2016 C7 Z51. When it arrived there was oil everywhere. Pulled off intake boot, and there was tons of oil.
Carvana says they have documented it and will cover any damages. Engine drove well and sounded nice.
How screwed am I? If I refill with proper level do you think there was some hydrolocking?

What do you mean by everywhere? Any pics? It's normal to have some oil in the intake boot. I'd search here and check the oil level according to the proper procedure. Could be a simple overfill of the dry sump system which is common.

I'll snap some pics soon. Oil all over front crossmember. About 3 qts were on the delivery truck.
They 100% overfilled it, by a large margin. How much of an overfill is acceptable before it starts bending rods??
Sidenote: if I decide to give it a chance, I could drain the oil and see how much comes out.

Geez, another “service technician” who doesn’t understand how to measure oil level in a dry sump system.
I hope you get this sorted quickly. The fact that it ran well means no hydro lock. I would get it cleaned up, fill it properly prior to starting it again, ask Carvana for an extended warranty at least for the engine, and drive on.
Congrats on your new baby!

I've got the extended warranty, but drinking oil can tweak some things. I don't want problems 38 months down the road.
Funny thing is my last c7 had exactly 10 qts in it but wasn't a Z51. Had to send that one back

Spoke with a corvette tech at the local chevy dealer. Says the engine should have blown a bunch of smoke out if it was that overfilled. Suggested draining and refilling and if the engine sounds good then no damage. Have appointment with him on Monday.

If you bought it from Carvana, then you have a good warranty with the car for 30 or 45 days.
Don't touch the car. I'd tow it to the dealer and let them inspect it. Carvana will pay every cent of that.
Make your decision about the car based on their findings.
Hurry though. You only have 7 days to get that accomplished to qualify for a no hassle return unless you have them commit to extend this term until the dealer inspection is complete.
They typically honor that and give you few more days but get it in writing.

Well stated, if Carvana overfilled the oil in your car & somehow damaged it, they will take care of the repair costs

Man, that is really crappy. Hope all works out. Bought from Carvana as well. Maint, detailing and paperwork are major problem areas from what I’ve experienced/heard. Their techs are likely assembly-line folks even more removed from the customer so real attention-to-detail is suspect. At least at the dealership, screw-ups can roll downhill real quick. At their volume, it’s a business cost, Next!
Good luck with whatever you decide. I would be torn

I've had the puddle thing on the floor, intake, bellows, air filter, and MAF, from an over-fill. As long as it runs, you're probably ok. Drain the darn thing and then fill it with 9.4 qts of oil. Measure when you're done to be sure that you did it correctly and go and enjoy the car.

IIRC, the dry sump engines (Z51, GS, Z06, ZR1) have two drain plugs for the oil system, be sure to drain both.

I use an oversize, very deep cat litter pan to catch the oil from both drain holes. It spurts out quite a bit. The perimeter dimensions catch all the 'spurt', and the depth easily holds 9+ quarts without sloshing out when you slide the pan out from under the car.

"Everywhere" could mean anything. Clean the engine and compartment completely, make sure it is filled correctly, and then see what's really going on. Only then can you make an informed decision about what to do. All the best.

The tech, which isn't a tech, doesn't know what a dry sump is. He didn't know how to check it and over filled it. Should be ok. See if Carvana will throw in a warranty just in case.

I figured they didn’t drain the pan. I took a hand pump and removed 2qts, pulled off the intake and drained about 0.5qts from the resonator. I had a spare delco airfilter from my last C7 (that was overfilled by 3-4 qts on a wet sump that didn’t last 3 days (they put 10+ qts in a wet sump))…and replaced the air filter that was drenched in oil.
I then cleaned as much up as I could and warmed the engine up. 175*f oil and then waited around 7 minutes. It was right below the top mark—perfect fill amount now.
I’ve since put about 200 miles of very light use and it seems flawless. Mechanically the car “seems” flawless. Although the front of the engine being drenched in oil bothers me. I’m trying to use up my 400 miles to see if there’s any oil consumption issues—this vehicle had a lot of sand around the dry sump area so I’m pretty worried about abnormal bearing wear.
The only other issue is the front bumper. Looks like it was removed and then reinstalled horribly. They removed a lot of pain on some mating surfaces
I have an appointment with a certified vette specialist tomorrow at Chevy so I will see what they say, but other than the oil mishap and the paint, I am impressed with how immaculate it is.
Oh one gotcha, one of the previous owners removed the NPP fuse…yikes, I hope it wasn’t beat on.
