lets talk targa roof
ok I have a carbon fiber roof that is exposed carbon fiber. it was not latched properly and as a result joined the flying roof club!! . im trying to repair the roof as it didnt break it just scratched the fire out of it. doing some wet sanding with 400 grit it seems theres a hard epoxy coating? im sure with the pressure I was using if it was a simple clear coat enamel I would have cut right thru it.
''so is it epoxy with a layer of clear? im hoping I can lay don a new layer of carbon fiber epoxy sand it and polish it. heres a few pics. and no it wasnt me! just found it for super cheap and thought it would be a fun project to do. the 3rd pic is the d/s I sanded so far. oh if anyone has a trashed roof I need all the hardware. ill take any pieces someone wants to sell!

I was told that the factory tops sold with exposed carbon fiber were specially picked for for their perfect layup, the ones that didn't look so pretty got painted.
Had to tell what you'll find as the paint comes off. And you'll probably have to use the special clear coat for UV protection.
Let us know.

my plan is to use a uv protectant epoxy and re epoxy the entire top. this will fill any scratches left and the edge were there were some tiny chips. I can then sand it down with 3000 grit and polish it out for a high gloss finish . worst case scenario I'll spray a few coats of 2k clear with uv protectant on the top

Sounds like the roof was damaged when he bought it. Turning it into insurance seems like insurance fraud.

correct. it was a super cheap buy and I thought if I can repair it it would be a fun project that wont cost me a lot. from a few videos I have watched it looks like I can sand it until the scratches are smooth then either spray it with uv clear coat paint or apply a uv epoxy topcoat and polish it. guess I need to repair the entire roof first then decide which way to go. leaning towards the uv top coat sounds like fun!

If none of that works just throw a wrap on it.

well this is turning into a super fun project! decided I would just go for it all in and hit the sides with some 220 grit on a d/a sander. its full c/f underneath!! so I can now sand the entire roof back to the oem c/f reseal it with epoxy and hardener and it will look like new! there aren't any huge gouges or cracks so it not hard at all to fix this roof. I also found a complete laguna blue roof for sale not far from me for about 500$ so it has all the hardware and head liner.

sorry fat fingered the 4 and didnt catch it. meant 2k which is a catalyst urethane. clear with a hardener.
as for epoxy im clueless at the moment. im trying to search but the vast amount of types of epoxy is staggering. ideally from some videos I have seen I would like a 2 part epoxy with a hardener that gives me about a 20 minute set time dries clear and can be painted on with a brush.
I finished all the sanding today stopping at 600 grit for now. I have about 4 deep scratches that seem to go to the c/f so I need to apply a layer to fill them and recoat the c/f in a few places. never done this before so im just flying by the seat of my pants!! (kinda like the roof did!! )

ok I ordered the west system epoxy and super clear hardener. should have it Friday. best score of the week was a complete top that has a large crack in it but everything I need underneath latches hardware headliner everything. FOR FREE!! about a 4 hr drive but worth it. also had a black halo and grill so I grabbed those as well to use to try my hand at overlaying carbon fiber since I will have a gallon of epoxy and a qt of hardener. this may be the 2nd funnest project I have done on the car to date. STAY TUNED...

first layer of epoxy is on!! so far it looks great. im going to let it set for about 10-15 minutes and lay on another coat and then let it cure over night. I may have to sand a few low spots but so far im stoked. also picked up the free top today and it has every thing I need to complete the underside.

4 coats of epoxy on and wet sanded to 600 grit. sanded in between each 2 coats. coat # 5 just went on and its a gloss factory!! no way anyone would ever know this roof was rock skipped off the highway!. will wet sand tomorrow with 800 and I think I might be ready for some clear coat and a 1500 to 3000 wetsand and polish. this has been a great learning experience and so much fun!! I think im going to try to overlay some c/f on my interior parts for the next project.
