Corvette Stingray or Grandsport

I have read a lot of RIM and tires issue for GS. Any idea of how often it occurs in GSs ? I have heard a damaged rims may cost $5-$10k.

it happens enough that it should be on your radar. replacement wheels can be had for 2k or higher depending on what youre looking for in a wheel. I beleive its an issue on the z06 as well.

Certainly on looks alone, GS all day but I just recently went from a grand sport to a stingray. Worrying about the wheels cracking with GM’s typical “stick your head in the sand and pretend the problem doesn’t exist” attitude bothered me. As well, the cost of the grand sport was near z06 money…without Z06 power which to me is ridiculous. I wound up in a 700hp stingray for a whole lot less than the GS and it’s been great. No regrets on moving away from the grand sport.

A friend has cracked two wheels in 20k miles on his GS. Each time he was able to get a genuine replacement from an online dealer for well under $1k, but his trend isn't looking good.
Other members of our club have had similar problems, not everyone but many.
If you drive somewhere with beautifully smooth roads, maybe you'll be ok if you just avoid curb-jumping. Here on the bombed-out roads of the Midwest, problems seem inevitable.
Our Z51 has much better stock wheels, on two different occasions we've hit frost heaves or potholes that ruined the tire (still held air!), one wheel was slightly bent and easily straightened. See below:
I did hear of one very high miles (400k?) basic Stingray that has also had all the wheels replaced, perhaps more than once. Nothing lasts forever.
Since I don't like the C8, I keep thinking about a 2019 Z06 to replace our 2017 Z51. But the price difference plus ~$5k for new wheels is holding me back.

Yes, the problem can occur equally with the GS and Z06, they both have similar "beautiful but weak" designs.

Folks I have been reading above posts with lot of interest and I had my mind set on GS. However this cracked wheel is occurring way too much in GSs. May have to start looking at Stingrays C7. Besides Magride, spoiler , Z51 is there anything I should look for in Stingray ?

If you like the GS looks, then don't let the crack wheel thing stop you. Just buy some nice forged wheels you like to make the car your own.
When we ordered our 2017 I wanted GS, wife did not like the "fat" look of the GS, she did not like big spoiler or red calipers either. That being said we got what she wanted since it was going to be her car anyway as you can see by the plate !!

Find two people , one with a stingray and the other with a GS -Z06 and park them side by side and decide !
The front grill on the stingray vs the GS is all I would have to see .

I would not have a Corvette if it was just a regular Stingray or Stingray Z51 and I did not want to deal with the supercharger and the added complexity of a supercharged motor. The Grand Sport was the choice for me. I wanted a car that had plenty of power which a GS is more than adequate but I wanted a car that optimized looks, braking and handling. I am not a Corvette expert as this is my first one. I thoroughly enjoy it and the social aspects of ownership. I have no intentions of driving it on the track. I have about 20,000 track miles on high performance motorcycles and hundreds of thousands street miles so driving a car on a track is sort of anti climatic to me. Horsepower is a lot easier to get than a chassis, suspension and brakes. Power is not always the solution to being on the track. Depending on the track it can be your enemy.

Even though I buy new, I still only go with the simplest, least optioned choice... since I keep nearly everything for the duration. Indeed, I'd have preferred a 0LT version. The more crappola the more hassle down the road.

Stingrays just a better looking car. GS/Z has too many scoops, lips, wings, doodads hanging off it
If you must go widebody go Z06 and get the power instead of just the poseur looks

Grand Sport is the sweet spot in the C7 line. I can tell you at Spring Mountain, I was the only Grand Sport running with 4 Z06s. Yea they pulled away from me on the straights, but I was on their bumpers in the turns. Z's extra power can work against you. Also, get a M7 which doubles the fun factor.

Z06 looks, base engine. Seems to fit the definition perfectly
