Failed Inspection-????????????
Just took my 2015 in for R. I. inspection. I am on good terms with the dealer I am still scratching my head. I had something to do with emission codes-eight off them total I think. They said if it was only one code they could pass it, but it was two codes. Then they noticed that they replaced the battery last month and the car would had to learn everything again and it would be OK. I we checked the mileage and the car had gone about 300 miles since the battery change, but they were done in two trips. Told me the computer worked on cycles and I had to do a lot of different types of driving. Short rides etc. Said to just drive it a lot and bring it back inn a couple of weeks. Ready to put the car in winter storage so this sounds nuts. What say. Legit ?

It is true the car needs a few cycles and has to be driven at variable speeds etc. Someone posted in detail what it is but I cant find it.

I believe you’re talking about monitors being set and not codes. Each state is different. In California all but evap need to be set. They do take driving and in a certain manner to set. Post up which ones aren’t set to get a better idea.

I found this in my cheat sheets:
1. Start with a vehicle where the engine has cooled all the way down over night.
2. Fuel level between 1/4 & 3/4 full
3. Drive between 20 & 30 MPH for 22 minutes, allowing speed to vary.
4. Stop and idle for 40 seconds, gradually accelerate to 55 MPH.
5. Maintain 55 MPH for 4 minutes using steady throttle input.
6. Stop and idle for 30 seconds, then accelerate to 30 MPH.
7. Maintain 30 MPH for 12 minutes.
8. Repeat steps 5 & 6 four times
Now, get tested.

General Motors Drive Cycle For Smog Check
In order to get all your OBD2 monitors for your GM (Chevy, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Pontiac, Oldsmobile) vehicle ready, please perform the following steps:- Start the vehicle from a cold start. The time to do this is if you have not driven the vehicle for a few hours and the engine coolant temperature is less than 50 degrees F.
- Let the engine run on idle. Turn the A/C and rear defroster on. You are trying to apply electrical load to the system. (THIS IS A MUST)
- Accelerate to 55 mph.
- Hold a steady speed of 55 mph for 3 minutes
- Let go of the accelerator and coast until the vehicle hits 20mph. Don’t apply brakes to slow down.
- Accelerate again until 60 mph.
- Hold steady for 5 minutes at 60mph for 5 minutes.
- Decelerate (coast to slow down).
- You may need to repeat steps 3-8 a few times if the battery was disconnected recently.

Yes, you'll want to take it on a few drives of varying lengths. I've done the GM smog check cycle and had that not work perfectly. If you just drive the car a bit it should reset the DTCs (so long as everything is actually functioning properly).

This happens to me as well two yrs ago. Changed the battery and lost my info. The inspection station slapped a rejection sticker on the windshield the day before heading to Carlisle. Drove to Carlisle and I was probably the only corvette there with a rejection sticker! Lol! This year, they slapped another rejection sticker on my 2016 z because my windshield washer motor didn’t work. Next yr I’m going to a different station!

I wonder of this is all BS. Supposed I traded my car to the dealer and he had someone ready to buy it. They would have to put a fresh inspection sticker on it. Would they give my car to a lot boy to drive it until it fixed itself? Doubt it. I think there is a way around this. When I go Monday and if it doesn't pass I want it fixed under warranty. In my simple mind if cannot pass inspection there is something wrong with the car that needs to be fixed. Had a friend, active and retired PD, and if he trusted you, give him your registration, $50 + the inspection fee and he got you a sticker that day. Too bad he died a few years ago. Ways to get around anything.

Thanks for posting this information. I do not have an emissions inspection requirement here, but nice to know about this anyway.

It is all true. Admittedly I retired from being a Lexus tech 10 years ago but had gotten into some of these situations then. We tried several times to do a drive cycle that the ecu would accept. We finally gave up. As you can see the stated drive cycle is very detailed and your local traffic can easily prevent you from doing the next step. For instance.;
- Hold a steady speed of 55 mph for 3 minutes
- Let go of the accelerator and coast until the vehicle hits 20mph. Don’t apply brakes to slow down.
- Accelerate again until 60 mph.

Unfortunately there isn't really a trick like others have mentioned. Some manufacturers can force run the monitors with their scan tools. VW and their derivatives can. However Chevrolet can't. They can only force run evap if I remember correctly but that is the unimportant one. You can always make an appt with a state ref who can inspect the car and sign off.
