Default Gas smell

For the past few weeks I've been noticing an order of gasoline in the garage. I have a 2015 C7 Stingray. I decided to bring it to the dealer and have it checked out, figuring my fuel pump was cracked. Turns out the actual driver side fuel tank is cracked and I need a new one AND a new fuel pump... estimated to be around $4500 bucks to repair!!!:

Anyone else ever have this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Having a gas tank that needs to be replaced is a new one on me. Before, I spent that kind of money, I think I would go somewhere else for a second opinion. Good luck!

I did a search in this section using “cracked fuel tank” as the search criteria and some related threads did show up. I know there have been a number of threads about a gas smell in the garage so you might do some more searching and see what you find. And a second opinion may not be a bad idea.

Holy cow. $4500 seemed steep so I poked around -- per book, the left tank is 17 hours if manual, and closer to 19 if automatic.. The part is about $1000. Standard low shop rate is $160. You can see up to $240 pretty easily in a lot of places though.

As above, I'd be surprised if it was the tank itself. Could just be the crossover tube, but you're still looking at dropping the transmission to replace that. Ask them to send you a picture of the crack, or show you if you're physically there.

The fuel pump is probably just a "well, we'll have the fuel tank out, might as well" situation.

I went through the whole cracked fuel pump / gas odor issue last year.

There is a special warranty available to cover the repair. My car did not list the special coverage under the warranty coverage tab for my car in their website but they covered it anyways.

I was concerned about possible issues made by a mechanic disturbing the factory original installation of the drivetrain and researched other possibilities to drop the tank. I found there were other methods.
It is not necessary to remove the drivetrain to replace the left pump/tank. In my case the dealer's mechanic removed the rear bumper cover and I believe the left muffler. With these items removed it was possible to reach the crossover tube and disconnect it. From there the tank is able to be lowered out. I was also told the work takes much less than "book time" when performed this way.

It's also possible for a person with average size arms to lay on their back under the car, reach up to the crossover tube and release the lock ring with their bare hands. Once that is done, there is a single 10mm bolt in the center of the crossover tube that needs to be removed and then the tube can be unseated from the tank and pushed back into a "S" shape to stay out of the way for the tank to be dropped. Not all mechanics will be physically capable of doing this "reaching exersize" but I tested it out before I took my car to the dealer and sure enough I was able to move the lock ring by hand.

Good luck with your repair. A cracked fuel tank is a rare failure, with plenty of low cost used tanks available in the salvage industry you may want to ask if a used replacement would be an option if you are stuck paying out of pocket.

Just came home from the dealer, dropping my car off for that very problem. My second tine. Happened 2 years ago and it took 5 1/2 weeks to get the part (fuel pump module) in.
Im hoping this wont be a repeat performance. Last time my car was damaged while it was there for so long.

If your vin number is listed by GM the problem is covered for 10 years or 120k miles. Common problem for Corvettes I had it my C6 and had repaired just before the warranty went off. I have received a letter from GM saying My C7 is also covered should this problem occur. I guess GM is still using the bad stock of plastic parts

I went through this nightmare over the summer. Incompetent dealer took months to finally fix the damn thing. Good luck.

There should be a GM website for recalls where you enter your VIN number and it will let you know.

You would think that GM would have taken care of this issue after the C6 cars had a similar defect....kinda like the 3LT dash pad peeling

Its easier and cheaper for GM to just fix cars when the parts fail then to issue a recall.
It doesnt matter to them the time wasted by customers and in some cases the ordeal the dealers put us through.

Isn't the idea of business to take in as much and payout as little as possible? My focus is on my next quarter bonus and NOT customer retention in the next 10 years, no matter what I say to your face. I have no loyalty to any company so I expect the same thing from them.

Default GM Recalls by VIN

GM Recalls and other "programs" by VIN.

Programs include lots of other "special warranty coverages" and "Special Coverage Adjustments"
for non safety stuff.

Or set up your GM Owner's center account:

I believe that site only covers Warranty not Special Coverage Adjustments (at least for me). I received the letter from GM but see nothing there.

If you log in to the GM Owner's center non safety recalls are mentioned. You can add any GM vehicle to this site. When you change from a Chevy to a GMC the top banner changes appropriately. Everything works the same for my Chevys and GMC.

Currently, there are no recalls or programs associated with your 2019 Chevrolet Corvette
