Default Winter Tire Choices for Base or Z51

Hi,
First time post but I've been lurking for years. I am going to sell my 2005 CTS-V and move into either a gen 6 Camaro SS or a Corvette, base or Z51. I have compiled my pros/cons list and one factor is the availability of dedicated winter tires. I am not willing to compromise with all seasons because I live in central NY. If I by the Vette, I will likely get a winter beater, but I will still drive the Vette during all but the worst days. As far as winter tires, try as I might, I can not find many choices for dedicated winter tires for either the base ot the Z51. The Z51 is my choice, but I am open to the base model if other factors such as tire availability are a deciding factor.

Can someone help me out with brand, model and availability of winter tires for the C7 base and Z51's. If I can not find options, this will definitely drive me to the Camaro.

Thank you in advance!

Mich PA4s. Before I got an extra winter car I drove the C7 through a lot of snow. Drove better then my X5 on all seasons.

What year C7? Some years the base and Z51 are the same size. You would probably have a hard time finding snow tires as the market for snow tires for this car is probably non existent. Best bet is to buy a beater than driving a V8 rear wheel drive sports car in Winter conditions. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Im not particular on which year, unless there is a year I should avoid (I plan on manual transmission, so the 8 speed shudder is not an issue)

They are All Season tires. They are 45,000 mile tires and they are great in the rain. Traction is just fine, although not as great as the cup tires but cup tires don't do cold very well and the A/S tires are fine with it.

O, OK. I am doing a lot of reading on these and they seem to be the real deal! Thanks for the lead

I sort of did the same thing as you, albeit further south in NJ just outside of Philadelphia. Not in the snow belt lie yourself. The car I bought, a 2019 Z51 Stingray had a unique GM wheel on it that I was looking for as well as summer tires and I didn't want to subject the wheels to the abuse of winter. So in December I was looking for wheels and tires. Tire Rack was able to source from their various warehouse locations a set of Z06 knock off wheels and Michelin Pilot Alpin Winter Tires. I had the set up delivered to me mounted and balanced within three days!! They did great for me.

Im 20 minutes north of manhattan with my daily driver c8 z51 with the tires it came with and it is fabulous.

Two winters no concern.

buy with confidence and you can always buy winters tires if you want.

iwould easily have done so just havent felt the need.

i drive a 1000 miles a month.

awesome ownership experience !

While I haven't bought winter tires from TR I have bought from them for 25+ years. Give them a call. Tell them what you are looking for. I am sure they can fix you up.

Our 2017 Z51 has an extra set of wheels/tires, we switch out every Spring/Fall.
For summer, we use the factory PSS runflats. A good autocross/track tire.
For winter, we use the Michelin AS3+ runflats. A good A/S, but definitely not a true winter tire. For that, get the Michelin Alpins, good in snow but not so great for summer..

Michelin is now producing the new models of tire (but in correct sizes for the C7) that came out for the C8. If you get the older versions, they are good tires but in a year or so you might be unable to get a replacement if one tire gets ruined by road trash, you'd have to run with one oddball new tire and three older versions, or replace all four.

+1 for Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires. By all accounts, they're a step-up from the previous Pilot Sport A/S 3+, which I found to be excellent all year-round and in all conditions (except ice) here in Colorado.

On a broader note, Michelin's branding leaves something to be desired, causing confusion for many. Their Corvette-relevant offerings include/included...
- Pilot Super Sport is the OE SUMMER performance tire that came on most C7s
- Pilot Sport Cup 2 is the OE DRY SUMMER performance tire that was part of the Z07 package
- Pilot Sport 4S is a more recent addition to Michelin's SUMMER performance tire lineup, never offered as OE on C7s
- Pilot Sport A/S 3+ was the go to ALL-SEASON alternative for our cars prior to replacement by the All Season 4
- Pilot Sport All Season 4 is the ALL-SEASON replacement for the A/S 3+

Bottom line, and I have plenty of experience, is if you plan on driving in real winter conditions get the Alpins. I have them and they are great in the snow. I only drove my car in all winter conditions the first year I owned it (and it managed beautifully). I now only drive in the winter when it's not snowy or sloppy so I will opt for the A/S 3+ when these are worn. I only changed my habits because I decided to keep this car for longer than I usually do so I want to keep it pristine.

If you're driving in real snow, you'll want snow tires. The Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 tires are phenomenal. I had a set for 2 winters when I was driving in snowy NJ, and they were worth every penny. The vette with snow tires handled better than anything out there that wasn't running snow tires.
