Default Temp gauge not working

Hello all. 16 base model. My temp gauge has stopped working. And the cooling fans keep running after I shut the car off. I unhooked the battery and it is working ffine for now. Any suggestions on what to look for? Is this going to be a re occuring issue?

Thank you

Temp sensor is bad.
Easy R&R.
Appears to be a standard problem on the 2016. Dealer had the sensor in stock.

Mine (‘14 M7 Z51) had the cooling fan running /temp gauge/rev matching all quit at once—temporarily fixed by disconnecting the neg battery cable to re-boot the systems. I have (hopefully) solved it by going into settings and defaulting suspension and steering controls to be determined by the ride mode I select on the console dial (usually ‘Sport’). After changing the settings it hasn’t occurred again, but it’s only been a few hundred miles and a few weeks. Started last October and has never gone this long without giving me problems, so I’m optimistic.
10/18/22 UPDATE: The issue was the thermostat. I think it was not closing and the irregular feedback somehow caused the controls to trip that switch. You engineers please forgive the primitive explanation…I’ve been fighting this for many months now and after I put in the new t-stat, the gauge reads steady instead of +/-30 degrees as I drove along. Rock steady below 220 and has not triggered the temp gauge rev/matching air cond failure as before.
Great U-tube on changing it—I learned not to set tools on top of the engine too (slide forward and hard to dig out!! I truly hope this is the final episode….

How long does your cooling fan keep running after the engine is off? On occasion mine will run for a short period of time (usually a minute or so).

I just bought this car 6 weeks ago. I purchased the B2B waranty. I happened yesterday when I was returning home from a road trip. The cooling fan was running on high speed. It would not shut off until I unhooked the battery. There was no check engine light too.

Follow up. Took car to dealer today and explained about temp gauge not working. And fans not shutting off. I had un hooked the battery on Sunday to get the fans to shut off. Dealer says everything is fine. I guess next time this happens I will replace the sensor myself.

I had the same problem about 2 weeks ago, 2015 M7. I noticed my rev match wasnt working and when I stopped the fans ran for several minutes. Then I noticed my temp gauge was at "0" made an appointment at the dealer and 2 blocks away the temp gauges were working again. So of course the dealer found no codes and no problems. Been working fine since. I read in the owners manual that when the temp gauge reads "0" the rev match is disabled

I’m having a similar issue. I replaced the coolant sensor the first time I lost active rev and coolant temperature while driving. Seemed to fix the issue. Maybe a month or so later it happened again. This time when I replaced the sensor nothing happened and it still was reading 0. So I went digging and found that it was possible the thermostat was stuck partially open and not allowing the car to come up to temp and that the computer going into a cooling frenzy to prevent engine damage. I replaced the thermostat and everything seemed fine again. A few months later that damn thing decided to get stuck closed and I was seeing 225 degree engine and coolant temperatures on morning at 5am with 60 degree ambient temperatures. So I tested the thermostat and it definitely wouldn’t open so I went back to Napa and had them warranty the part. I replaced that 3 days ago and this morning boom, car turns off active rev while I’m cruising at 50mph on my way to work. I’m going to pull the thermostat and check it and hopefully that has failed and I’ll get a refund and see if I can’t locate a better part. If it doesn’t fix anything, am I missing something else? Hoping it’s not something like the dash or computer taking a poo lol. It’s a 2016 3LT z51 7-speed if it is any help.

That seems strange—to have that many thermostats fail. I replaced mine with OEM (bought on eBay and installed myself) and it’s been clear sailing ever since. Please keep us posted on your results.

you may try a coolant flush and replace the thermostat again. A friend had the same problem, and the coolant system had some gunk in it and had it flushed, it was a 2016 too fixed the problem for him

I find it very strange myself. My last car had 240k miles and is currently on the same thermostat haha. When I purchased the car in 2019 I just went ahead and replaced all the fluids even though it had all the service records and was certified preowned. I’m a big believer in amsoil products so I converted everything over then. So I flushed the radiator and replaced with amsoil coolant and coolant booster. Did the clutch fluid, brake fluid, transmission fluid, rear diff fluid and all the filters. That said I also drained out about half a gallon or so with each thermostat just to make sure I didn’t spill any out of the hose since the petcock is very easy to get to and when the car is cold it’s not a big deal. The fluid still looked brand new and there wasn’t any signs of contamination. It may possibly be just the motorad brand that Napa sells that is giving me the issue. It is the first thermostat I’ve replaced that I had to also replace the entire piece. If the thermostat Is bad again I will surely just see if I can’t locate a OEM one on eBay or something like mentioned above and see how that works. I appreciate the hasty responses. Thanks 🙏

Well I am glad to report that things have been fixed and all is well. Just happened to be completely coincidental that I had back to back thermostat issues. I decided to go to the dealership and grab a factory OEM replacement. When I pulled the old thermostat out to my surprise it wasn’t stuck open like I thought since my temps wouldn’t get much higher than 160. So I start inspecting the thermostat and right on the center piece it says 71C or 160F… so I grabbed the box it came in and it wasn’t the right part so somehow a 160 degree ended up in a 194 degree box. Mystery is solved and I waited to write back in case it started giving me more trouble. Moral of this story is whenever possible, double check the part in the box matches otherwise you might start pulling your hair out like I was LOL.

I dug this old thread up so forgive me gents. new to me 2016 stingray and my coolant was reading 100 degrees. fans stay on has been mentioned here. I bought a sensor to replace it but I watched 2 vids and 1 showed it on front passenger side above the water pump. another one shows it on driver side just under the harness which is it!!

My problem was a lazy thermostat. I changed the thermostat only. No need to do the sensor. Mine has been perfect since.

ok, I changed the temp sensor which appeared to be the correct one on driver side, and disconnected the negative battery terminal. Cleaned it too, it was a little crusty but brushed and vacuumed off. started the car and lights went nuts and told me to lower and raise driver side window. it was already down and wouldn't go back up. I'll try it again in the morning.
