Do you like to enough to move away to a more easy going place? If not, can you have a residence somewhere else? I know my county has emissions but a few miles away, it doesn't matter. Some have even claimed to live in that county since they have a parent or something there.

Few places are without vehicle related issues, even Texas (RE: Temp Tags):

But, California does seem to be an increasingly difficult place for auto enthusiasts - aside from some apparently great driving roads.

After 20 years I still miss the surf, sand and mountains but defiantly do not miss the traffic, politics and high fuel prices! Texas isn't perfect, but I have yet to find a better all around place to live.

Some of the counties in California do nor require SMOG Checks, so, you can probably get away with it there. In the LA Basin, forget it.
Check this thread about tuning in SoCal.. It is long thread and many links. I did not read it all:

With Austin bringing in all the Tech Companies from Silicon Valley, Texas will not be free for much longer. All it takes is one major city to change the demographics of the state. jmho

So the downside is you’ll have a car with more than enough usable power that runs correctly and $2k in you pocket. You could always just lurk on the tech section for posts from the guys who haven’t realized they have the car they used to have to build. They start with “trouble code after mod.”

Not for long. They are bringing their attitudes with them. It sort of reminds me of a virus. They destroy the host and then move on looking for the next victim. It truly is a disease.

Post #12 was your warning: post #18 was your reward.
