Default Merged battery thread - cost of a new battery

I have a 2019 Grand Sport which I purchased in August 2018. I have had no electrical issues whatsoever but I am wondering when and if I should change out and buy a new battery.

A battery (your existing Delco) that matches or exceeds power requirements specified by the vehicle's manufacturer, vehicle's charging/starting system has been and is in good condition, battery trickle charged (battery tender) when stored, installed in a vehicle used/stored in a moderate climate should last 5-6 years.

Good idea to start looking to replace at 5 years old.

I base this opinion on my owning/operating a chain of auto parts stores over 16 years and buying/selling/warranting literally thousands of batteries over the years.

Stuff matters.

You have a cold climate and that is a negative.
Do you use a battery tender as that would negate the cold climate (sorta)
The batteries don't like heat either.

From the "tenor" of the comments on the forum you can expect 3 - 5 years out of the battery. I run them until the first slow start. As soon as that happens to me, the battery is changed ASAP.

Agreed...our climate is probably similar to yours...over many years we've gotten a minimum of 5 years out of our batteries...with 6 years being about the max. I do exactly what Elmer suggested...keep running them until cranking starts to slow down...even then you have a bit of time until they totally go.

it could be good for few more years if taken care of.
batteries can just go also fairly quickly showing quick sign of issues.
overall like mentioned if it cranks well even after a few days of non use thats a good sign of a good battery i would say.
also as long as you charge/trickle it ever so often and ensure when you do drive it go for a decent drive distance.

My batteries have always gone without a warning, I would definitely change it at the five year mark.

I changed the original battery in my 2014 when it was a little over 5 years old. I was not having any starting problems or other electrical issues, but just did it as a preventative measure.

Even though I used a trickle charger when inactive, car never outside overnight, and despite the fact that it cranked up like day 1, I changed my battery after 5 years. I did this mostly for my mental health regarding the battery.

watch your ammeter on the instrument panel, my car would quickly go back to 12.8 after starting within a few minutes. When it starts to charge above 14 volts and lags going back to under 13 the battery is getting old. I changed mine out after noting that after 4 years. Getting stuck someplace with a dead battery is to be avoided

O E M Delcos run about 4-7 years depending where you live and battery tender use.

If you can't or don't want to do it yourself, Chevy dealer would be my choice for two reasons.
One, because they will have a replacement Delco which is a VERY Good battery for the C7.
And Two, because exchanging a C7 battery is a more difficult than your typical car battery and they know how to do it without shorting something out or ruining your carpet.
I believe battery and install runs about $225>$250 from what I've heard.

I chose to have the dealer install it since my car was in the shop for other things anyway, and the price with installation was roughly the same as buying a premium battery from a local parts store. It was $222 for a 42 month gold series with installation.

However, I may do it myself in the future. The fate of your car is 100% dependent on the care of the employee who does the installation. The corvette tech did not do mine. I don't believe the labor is enough to do the job right, so they may give it to "the lube guy." I would have paid more for labor for more care. They broke my battery hold down bracket and ripped the carpet. They didn't even bother tucking the carpet back in, so the tear was readily apparent. I did not warn them about the possibility of ripping the carpet because 1) the service writer usually forgets everything I say anyway and 2) when I come in with what I think is helpful knowledge (obtained from these forums), I get the "we know how to do our jobs" look. I have an appointment this week to have a new carpet installed, and I'm hoping something else is not broken in the process. I might suggest carefully pulling back the carpet yourself before taking it in.

I bought my current battery from the local Chevy dealer and had them install it - total cost was around $180.

I agree on the idea that, if kept on a tender, it will probably last 5 years. At that time, replace it even if it seems good. Most of the time if they fail, you won't have much warning, and could really be a pain.

I use a Deltran Tender starting back in 1987 with my first C4 and had batteries last 10 years. My tractor was connected to a tender and the battery was 12 years old when i sold it and bought a new tractor last fall !

Batteries now tend to die w/ little warning. What I have seen is that back in the day a car engine cranked over 2-3 seconds and then fired up. So you got a chance to hear it crank and could notice if it was cranking slower than normal. Now they fire up almost instantly and you don't really hear the starter cranking the engine. So you have no idea if it is cranking at its usual speed or not. I replace ours at 5 years whether I have had problems or not. A corollary to Murphy's Law is that a battery will never die in your garage, it will always die at the least opportune time and at the worst location.

Default cost of a new battery

Hello, I was thinking of replacing my battery in my 2017 Stingray. I called my Chevrolet Dealership, near Seattle Washington and the price was $200, plus $100 to install, plus around $30 for tax, = $330.00 or so. Seems high to me. Plus the new flat rate is now $179 per hour. Comments?

Most Chevy dealers are between $200 and $250 from what I've heard.
