Carvana return??? Trans issue

Carvana return??? Trans issue
I bought a 2017 z51 2lt with the automatic. Looks like I’m having the common transmission/torque converter issue, as the rpm fluctuates a bit at cruising speeds. Today is my last day to turn the car back to Carvana no questions asked. I’ll have the 100 day warranty after that that I may be able to get it fixed during. Looking for some guidance on the long term issues with this problem. Is this something that can be easily resolved or should I play it safe and return the car and look for another.

If you have remaining GM power train warranty look for a dealer to perform the GM TSB 18-NA-355 for the triple flush. 24 quarts of the new Mobil 1 LV ATF HP and go from there. If you still have issues after that, have the dealer proceed accordingly. Prices on these C7's won't be coming down anytime soon.

I agree with BigVette427 100%. I had the same problem as the OP. The flush he mentioned solved my problem. Your Transmission is covered by the powertrain warranty which I think is 5 years or 50K miles.

Get the service done under warranty. My 2016 was serviced under warranty. Just made it as the dealership was able to schedule my work on the very last day my warranty was still active. All is perfect now, but I still use a Range device to keep it in V8 mode all the time.

If you like the car, I recommend driving the car in Manual Mode using the Paddles and find out if the RPMs continue to fluctuate. I believe what you are seeing is typical when driving in Automatic mode as the torque converter clutch is engaging / releasing in concert with the cylinder deactivation which is probably causing the RPM changes you are seeing. In Manual mode, the Active Fuel Management system is deactivated allowing the car to run on all 8 cylinders all the time. A side benefit is Fun ... driving the car in Manual mode replicates the feel of a manual transmission where you are controlling the shift points and sound of the engine. Yes, you will sacrifice gas mileage but receive the benefit of driving one of the greatest sports cars the way it should sound and feel. Another benefit is you increase the temperature of the trans fluid which helps evaporate moisture in the fluid from condensation. My car has over 60k miles of mostly Manual driving and I do not have any issues with shudder if I use Automatic mode.

If you like the car and got it at a good price, check on any remaining warranty and if there is time, get it fixed. It seems like the triple flush has cured the vast majority of the tranny problems and the addition of a Range AFM Eliminator keeps the car from going into the 4-cylinder mode.
If no warranty remains, you’ll have to decide whether the expense of the triple flush and the chance of future problems is worth it vs. turning the car back in. Seems like the prices for used cars just keep rising so take that into account too as you may have to pay more for a different one.

I have a ‘17 with 64k mi. The first triple flush (old fluid) did not work. Had the flush done w/the new fluid, when it came out, and it worked great. I do always drive in manual mode, but keep a Range unit handy in case I ever want to use automatic. It’s been ~ 15-20k mi. since last flush. All is great.

I would keep it if you like it.
If the powertrain factory warranty does not cover it, the Carvana warranty for 100 days after the sale is top notch.
My Vette has needed nothing so far and I still have 25 days left, but the Benz I bought from them before that, their warranty people paid well over $5k in repairs and got the car all sorted out. All it cost me is $50 a trip since it was repaired at a MB dealership rather than a preferred shop like Pep Boys.

Could the rpm fluctuating be the car going into 4cyl mode then back to V8. I have a manual (never in eco ) so I dont know

FWIW, my new to me 2016 Coupe with only 4K miles and the A8 transmission did that. Had no idea it was happening unless I was looking at the tach and I didn’t give it a second thought. Felt no shudder or anything unusual and thought it was normal. Then I joined this forum and started learning about the A8 torque converter/AFM issues. Was still under 5k miles and full factory warranty when I bought the Range Device and never had another problem. That was before they were offering the current triple flush of the transmission fluid. I eventually sold the car 2 years later with only 7.5k miles, but not due to any problems. And the transmission performed flawlessly with the Range device installed. BTW, I kept the device in case I ever get another C7. Would never own another A8 C7 without the Range device installed.

If you like the car, contact Carvana concerning their 100 day warranty to see if you can take the car to a Chevrolet dealership to have the transmission flush performed, that will most likely fix your issue

Only if you don't take it to a preferred provider, there is a $50 deductible.

(2) - Shuddering - Feels like you are running over a rough road when you are on a smooth road. Comes and goes without warning.
(3) - Vehicle Lurches
(4) - Slow to go into gears including reverse.
(5) - Gears don't shift easy.
(6) - Strange Noises - Clicking or revving.
(7) - Gears Slipping - Loss of acceleration.
(8) - Overheating.
(9) – RPMs jumping up and down slightly at constant highway speed.

Is your C7 demonstrating any of the other systems of the A8 shudder except the fluctuating RPMs? (1) - Surging and Lugging - Your car can't seem to maintain constant speed.

And just curious, whats the reasons you would never buy from Carvana, Vroom, etc?
