I'm driving my car more now and feel I'd like to have some back up in the case of a flat, or other issues. Onstar is more expensive but also has other nice to have features and integration. AAA will get the job done but seems more basic.

What to others prefer?

I am happy with AAA as it covers all my vehicles, not just the GM ones.

I still have AAA because they cover my other 20 year old clunkers. Just be aware that they can take many, many hours to have someone show up.

AAA here. Depends where you live. The longest I’ve had to wait was an hour, but I always request a flat bad, and I’m in socal.

I prefer AAA, have had it for years for my wife and I, AAA not only covers you in your vehicle but also you are covered when you are driving someone else's vehicle or even if you are a passenger in another vehicle, not just covering your designated vehicle as Onstar does, covers you as a person. Seems much better to me than Onstar Also have gotten very good motel rates using AAA, even better than senior discount prices.

AAA would be the better choice IMO. Not tied to just one particular vehicle.

I have a 2019 GS and my wife has a 2013 Cruz (gag retch). After Buying my GS last May Ive only had the misfortune of driving that cruz once or twice. She wont have anything to do with my GS which is fine with me. Anyway we have both Onstar and AAA and are happy with both coverages. While thers some overlap in coverage It works for us.

AAA has paid off in spades for me over the years, mostly for stuff such as my daughters locking keys in cars, flat tires etc..

I have both and will not change that coverage!

I have the AAA Premier coverage which gives you one 200 mile tow a year and numerous shorter tows, and all the other goodies! This is good, but it is not good if there is no cell coverage.

I can get in touch with OnStar as long as I am not in a Tunnel. With it I can use my phone to open the car door. I also like to transfer an address to my car navigation system from my phone when someone sends me a location to meet them at. It also lets OnStar know if my car is in an accident and if I do not respond, they send a response.

I have been a member of AAA for over 25 years and they have not been able to help me in those circumstances. One time, I was in my C4, and I got a flat, at the Leo Cabrillo Beach, about 20 minutes north of Malibu. This is in an area which I would have thought I had cell coverage, It did not! I wished I was in the C6, where I could push a button and get a tow truck.

I got to change the tire. I can tell you, trying to put a full size flat tire in the tire carrier in a C4 is not a lot of fun!

The main reason I have OnStar is communication. We were in my buddies GMC Truck going across country to Florida. Somewhere , in Montana, in the middles of nowhere, we saw a disabled car with an older couple in it. Neither of our cell phones had coverage. Since, I was used to OnStar from my C6, I told him to hit the button. They answered right away. He told them what was going on. They had our location and told us help was on the way.

We stopped, made sure they had water, and told them help was on the way.

To me, I want to know, whatever the circumstances, I can get in touch!!! jmho

I cancelled the OnStar after the 3 free months ran out...have had CAA (equivalent of your AAA) for 40+ years...excellent service and way more cost effective in my mind.

And as others have said...we have 3 vehicles including the C7, so CAA for a bit over 100 bucks/year covers them all for me.

OnStar also uses cellular. They are on Verizon in the U.S.

Your cellphone must be on a different carrier that may not had a cell tower nearby.

My buddy had verizon and I had AT&T, neither one of them worked. OnStar did.

Cash, Credit cards, Cell phone, and a sidearm is all you need. One or more will take care of any car related problem quicker than either AAA or Onstar.

Curious - I cancelled Onstar after the trial, but my window sticker says I have 5 years roadside assistance. Does anyone know what that covers?

If you go AAA, get the Gold Package, it covers towing for up to 100 miles versus 3 miles for the regular package. Well worth having!

Check with your insurance carrier. They may have service equivalent to AAA and should be cheaper since you are a policy holder. If not,. AAA over OnStar.

I second the comment on getting the AAA gold, the default towing mileage is a joke.

Lastly if you can determine the local police department, call their non emergency line, as I understand it, the police have priority access to towing services.

Last year we switched from AAA to our insurance carrier when we discovered that it was not only much cheaper but also more comprehensive.
