I have the patches on both sides covering up the holes on my 2019 ZR1

Have the holes on my 2016 but no patches.
Most likely it has to do with the way its made being a hollow plastic part.
Another guess considering its plastic, is the holes are there to relieve stress.
If it was sealed, the plastic can expand and contract when the air inside gets hot or cold and possibly cracking the glass.

So I took the leap and removed mine yesterday as knowing they were there kept me up at night.

I disconnected the negative battery terminal and removed the stickers. So far, I haven't thrown any codes.

But did you set the parking brake firmly, first? Your owner's manual states that the parking brake must be set FIRMLY.
