Default GM installs run flats

First Corvette and first set of run flats ... I wonder why GM decided on run flats vs normal tires with an included can of sealant and small air compressor?
PS, I am not seeking to debate run flats vs regular, it simply seems GM could have delivered a better running car for less money using regular tires.

Probably, in part, because the last time they went that route, it didn't work out for THEM as well as runflats.

Probably because four tires is cheaper than four tires, a compressor, and a can of fix-a-flat. Cost cutting is everything in this industry.

I'm not certain but was it mentioned that tire sealant screws up the tpms sensor?

There are many threads discussing the pros and cons of RF tires... use the search engine and educate yourself. I see that you have fewer than 140 posts.... we have members here that have been on for two decades - they have a lot of knowledge.

Maybe because a compressed gas propellant can of anything eventually goes flat itself; leaving you with a can of nothing useable.

after running 5 different sets of runflat tires on six different cars; a set of non-run flat winter tires now on my C7 Z06 is the softest ride I've experienced since I replaced goodyear eagles with non-runflat NITTOs on a C6 GS.

maybe for a local hop-only vette the risk of a flat tire is much less running non-run flats; than the risk of a bent wheel from hard riding runflats on soft-metal stock Z or GS wheels?

Agreed...when I went to change the tires on my C5, I went with non-run flats for half the price. Figured the CAA could tow me to a garage if I ever got a flat (never did).

Planning to do the same with my C7 when it needs new tires.

GM orders these things 30,000 at a time. Their pricing is just a little different than you or I would get at Tire Rack.

When it needs new tires? I'm about to put on my 3rd set.... at 93,000+ miles...

Oh boy has the answer. Sealant ruins the tire pressure sensors so the alternate is a plug kit and pump (and a jack?). Most people aren't interested in plugging a tire by the side of the road or getting flat-bedded to a tire shop..

Never used it but Slime has a sealant that they say is TPMS compatible.

My thoughts are GM chose to go with safety in mind since the runflats, with rare exceptions, do not require the driver to stop on the side of the road, get out and risk getting hit trying to fill up the tire, and then hope that the tire stays inflated for the trip home/to the repair shop. Yes the tires are more expensive, but they have made very good improvements in runflats since they came out.

I wish my daily driver Subaru came with run flats. Been stranded and don’t like that feeling.

All kidding aside. I have had 5 flats since I have had the car. Without run flats I would have had to had the car towed on 3 of those. I'm a believer. I have the run flat religon!

I always thought they did RF because there's no room for a spare. At least RFs give you a chance to get to service.

If there are so many positives to run flats I wonder why manufactures don't put them on more cars? Is safety (on the side of the road) only an issue for Corvette drivers?
