Default Top Tier Gas

An article in our Sunday paper, AZ Daily Star, suggested you should find a gas station that sells a certified gasoline Top Tier Gas. One that meets a standard beyond the generic minimum for additives. Lots of stations and brands qualify. We ask at the Oro Valley AZ Safeway station we frequent and the guy said lots of people are asking but no we don't. Look for this logo on the pump. Not sure it makes a ton of difference, but who knows?

The main brands of gas meet Top Tier standards which largely focuses on additives, but some second or third tier (read "cheap gas") may not...
Their website has a list of approved stations, which may exclude some you have become used to using for their attractive pricing.

Not exactly news. The Owner’s Manual in your C7 recommends you use Top Tier gas.

I have a hard time believing top.tier is actually any better. I suppose if you measure things in just the right way then it might be.

Most gasolines of an equivalent octane will burn just fine, but as posted, Top Tier approval has to do mostly with the additive packages each brand specifies. Top Tier fuels must meet certain standards provided by those additives...

Those additives will not only help keep your valves ( on standard FI engines) and other engine parts clean, but may help to prevent the fuel sender from effing up. And that is a very expensive fix.

Amen!
After reading the horror stories of GM fuel senders getting gunked up with sulfur in the fuel, bought bottles of Techron to add every 5k mi in addition to using Top TIer gas... Cheap insurance compared to removing the rear end to gain access to the gas tank and sender

Im sure there is some sort of standard that must be met before the Top Tier designation can be applied.
Since im not a chemist, I couldn't really say how significant the differences are, but if I had to guess, id say marketing departments created them.

I try to use gas stations that only sell top tier gas. I figure the additive package that is included in the gas is worth it and the cost is not any different than the other brands that are not listed as being top tier.

Won't do anything to keep the valves clean on a direct injection engine.

Consumer reports did a test and concluded top tier definitely cleans the engine and recommends to use it.

With all the top tier stations around...and the MINOR difference in cost why NOT use top tier gas....I can't believe for what these cars cost, the price difference would be an issue..JMO

How would fuel clean the valves considering it is direct injected into the cylinder?

From Consumer Reports and the AAA April this year.

Study Shows Top Tier Gasoline Worth the Extra Price
"AAA analysis reveals that gas with detergent additives can keep an engine running smoothly
... Using an independent engine testing lab that specializes in fuel analysis, AAA sought to answer the question: Is “Top Tier” gasoline worth the price? The short answer is yes."

While the valve cleansing results are not directly applicable to DI engines, Top Tier brands "... showed that on average, Top Tier gasoline had 19 times fewer carbon deposits on injectors, intake valves, and in the combustion chamber when compared to regular gasoline." and "... analyzing gas prices over a 12-month period found just a three cent price difference between non-Top Tier and Top Tier gasoline."
"... Bottom line: For the nominal investment, this study shows that motorists would benefit from using Top Tier gasoline as their primary fuel."

Hmm... three cents a gallon seems to be cheap insurance to help keep an $8000 engine clean...

Top tier was and continues to be an excellent marketing ploy/topic o sway the public to buy higher priced fuel, that have little benefit.
The amount added to each tanker is minimal.

I use Costco gas and 12 oz of Techron every 5000 miles and worry not about the fuel system. Saving money and taking care of my C7!

In my area it's hard to buy non Top Tier gas. All the stations sell it. You'd have to go out of your way to get non Top Tier.
