Is getting keyed more rare than what we believe it to be?

In 61 years of driving I have only known two people who had their cars keyed. One of them owned a Corvette.

Drifting
My 2016 was keyed while parked in Toronto in 2017. I had been staying at a hotel there for 6 months and went back to the States and brought my C7 back with me. I arrived Sunday afternoon and spent a couple of hours cleaning up the car after the 1000 mile trip. The keying occurred that evening/night. Walked out in the morning and said OH SH__. No cameras at the hotel. Only one stripe on the rear quarter panel but deep - through the clear coat and base color. Immediately took it to the best shop in town as I was heading to Carlisle the following week. I chose not to submit to by insurance company as the repair was $1000 - equivalent to my deductible. I have suspicion on who may have done it but nothing I can do about it. The body shop did a great job and you could never tell it happened.

Melting Slicks
I'd say it is a very rare happening, if only because anyone with any sense (a) would never think if doing it and (b) knows that the results could be very unpleasant for the person doing the keying.
It's an issue here partly because it does sometimes happen and partly because many people's Corvettes are their babies, cars they have looked forward to for years and about which they are both proud and protective.

I had a 2011 Camaro SS that got keyed from the headlight to the taillight on the passenger side. Deep enough to go to the metal. No pissed off wife or GF to blame. I parked out in the end of the parking lot at the mall here and was inside for about an hour. It’s always nervous leaving my vette because of that

I didn’t file it on insurance. I paid out of pocket. The shop actually did a great job repainting half the car. They specialize in classic cars so they knew what they were doing.

Even when they painted half the car, did it look good enough where there wasn't an obvious mismatch (older vs new) in the paint? Curious, I see a lot of people on here saying they just pay out of pocket. Is there a reason why you didn't just have insurance pay for it? I'm sitting here forking over tons of money to them that I expect them to pay for this kind of stuff.

Never had any of my cars keyed nor do I know of someone that has had it happen to them.

Had my car keyed in high school parking lot by a kid I didn't know, he had no issue with me but was just a loser and decided to do it that day. My bet is most cases are of stupid people doing random stupid things rather than an attempt to get back at someone.

I believe it’s rare. However it’s happened to me on my 17 Raptor. No idea who or why. Got about 12” scratch on my rear drivers side door. Haven’t had an issue with any other vehicles though. I don’t stress about it.

My C7Z06 was keyed in a parking lot down in Destin, FL. I was on vacation and made the mistake of parking in the lower level of the resort’s parking garage in the back ... thinking my car would be out of the way from normal traffic & safe. Solution was to have the door sanded & repainted by my dealer for $500; I did not file on insurance. My car is black so no problems matching the color. I don’t park in secluded areas anymore! Whoever keyed my car drew a smiley face ... they must have liked my car?
