0w-40 Mobil1 Oil

I have a 2017 Stingray (wet sump/non-Z51) and had the first oil change done at 3,000 miles. The dealership used Mobil-1 (possibly 5w30). My second oil change will be done at around 6,000 miles (sometime in April, I guess). Should I ask for the 0w40 when I take it to the local Chevy shop? Is it better to use this in our "older" cars?

Tadge has recommended that 2014-2018s use this oil as well. It's a newer formula than Mobil 1 5w30, and it's my speculation that GM has done quite a bit of testing with it and found it to be a better overall fit for C7s that are driven a bit harder and see higher oil temperatures, and need the higher HTHS protection of a 40 weight oil. Based on the MSDS that has been released for this oil, it uses a base oil comprised of a blend of PAO and GTL (gas to liquid) so it's what a oil formulator/tribologist friend of mine would call a "true synthetic" base oil.
If you're wondering about what a GTL base oil is, here is some good reading about it:

I’m pretty sure that the correct 10-40 is the ESP formula, and won’t be in stores for a few months. Dealers may have it now. I’m getting the MRC updated and an oil change Friday, and report back.

I read the benefits of 0w-40 Mobil1 Oil. Better flow at cold temperatures and better protection at high engine temps. Since I don’t even start the car during cold temps or track the car not sure its worth paying an even higher price for oil would provide me with any dividends.

Please note guys; the Mobil 1 0W-40 that is out right now is the Porsche (or European) blend. I just attended a Mobil 1 lubricant lecture last weekend, the US version will be out in a few months.

If it's not at dealers now, that's going to be interesting w/ 2019s filled with 0w40 rolling off the assembly line and showing up at dealerships any day now. Some of those dry sump '19 cars will need 500-mile oil changes within a week or two after delivery.
With regard to what GM is going to recommend, the Corvette Chief Engineer is already on record on this forum as saying 0w40 is recommended for all C7s (14-19) going forward. He said it is a new formulation beneficial to all LT1 and 4 engines.

I switched from Mobil 1 5w30 to Mobil 1 0W40 European car formula available at Walmart last couple of oil changes and can't tell any difference (and really didn't expect to).

^^^ Keep in mind that the current M1 0w40 FS European Formula is not warranty approved

The Exxon website does not yet appear to be consistent at least to my eyes on which oil is the recommended one, and which exact MSDS sheet goes with which oil. There is a product data sheet of recent vintage that does say Dexos2 approved, but you can’t tell which MSDS goes with it, nor can you tell for sure whether that is the oil that GM is going to recommend. The only 0W40 MSDS that I see with a late 2017 or 2018 date looks like 70% group 3 synthetic, with only a trace of PAO, and zero GTL. And for that matter, Exxon is not noted for GTL oils anyway, that is mostly Shell/Pennzoil. So I’m still waiting on fully consistent data from the GM and Exxon websites before concluding anything about the oil’s composition.

Plus I buy it when Mobil1 is having a rebate and I get a $12 check for each 5 quart jug I buy at Walmart.

I have been using the 0w40 European Formula oil for several years in my C6 Z06(and my Mercedes as it meets Mercedes's requirements) and it's cost at Walmart is exactly the same as 5w30 Mobil1 oil.

Will using a non approved oil do anything bad? Probably not, but if push comes to shove... You ain't folloing the rules.. Just saying...
oh and I've got a case of the 0-40 Euro blend M1 in the garage for my old M3... Some of it may have found a way into the corvette at some point...lol, but all of the required oil changes have been done by the dealer on GM's dime so far. That changes Friday when it goes in for the MRC upgrade and an oil change. (I'm being lazy and trust this dealer...)

Thanks for the info - that's consistent with what we were told at a couple different presentations (by Mobil and Harlan Charles) at the Corvette Corral during the Rolex 24.
They said the new Dexos spec Mobil 1 0W-40 will be the factory fill in all newly built Vettes, it will be available at dealerships Feb 1st, but not available at retail auto stores for about 6 months.
Do you know if it was pumped from a bulk big barrel source, or did they pour it out of 1qt or 5qt jugs???

The Mobil 1 0W-40 Dexos certified oil was discussed at the Rolex 24.
Harlan Charles gave a presentation.
You can see the Mobil 1 tag says it meets the Dexos 2 spec:
And the after the Mobil 1 people gave a presentation they had a couple dozen caps available for us, and I was able to grab one:

OK, sorry I am new to this thread.
So should we be running 0W-40 Mobil 1 regardless of how the car is driven? I bought a GS in November and closing in on 500 miles. Just wondering if I should request a 0W-40 change. I do plan on tracking the car 3-4 times a year. Most of the time will be driven to car shows or cruising around. I must have 6 jugs of Mobil 1 5W30 sitting in my garage.
