Just based on what we know, I would probably pass on this one.

My previous C7 was taken apart by bubba several times to find a knocking noise. After replacing the torque tube, and finding the noise still present they finally figured out it was the sway bar end links. While they finally got that noise fixed a short time late a banging noise started happening from the rear of the car. My opinion always has been and continues to be, once the shop get there hands on a car for major surgery it will never be right. Traded that car in.

One thing to consider is that you could potentially purchase a pre owned car and not know the history.. my corvette had the entire engine replaced as well as many other parts and there are no records of it on the carfax...

I believe Car & Driver had to replace the engine on their long term tester in '14 too

So what seems to be the argument is the fact that you do not know the quality of work done while replacing this engine. If it helps, when mine was done it was a 3 week process, multiple people were involved before any decisions were made, and only one technician was allowed to do any of the work. I currently work at a Nissan dealer where only one guy who my store paid nearly 10k to certify can touch our GT-R's, I think this type of work would be a similar situation. On top of that your warranty is a lot less questionable for any repairs now that Chevrolet has already put there hands on the car it is backed by the 100k powertrain. Just some info, if it will save you around $5,000, might be worth it.

I'd pass and find one with the original motor.

New Engine. Why not? Unless it was done in a backyard shop it would be a plus to me.

But I don't come from the "everything has to have matching numbers" generation.

I've done the same thing, for the same reasons.

Buying any car is a risk of some sort. Look at price, look at warranty, look at the fact that this engine will have maybe 1000 fewer hours on it than the original engine would have had, look at your tolerance for risk, and make your choice.

My 08 C6Z dropped a valve in August 2011 and GM replaced the engine. 4 years later I traded the car and hadn't had a problem with the installation. That is true for a hell of a lot of people. The car described at the beginning of the thread has 10K miles on it since the engine was replaced. Any issues would have been taken care of under the warranty during that time. Supposedly the carfax only lists the engine replacement so there must not have been any issues with the engine since the replacement or there would have been some work done.
