C7 fuel gauge failure fix
Maybe you will remember me from October. I think you guys nicknamed me "hi-miler." BTW, I turned 136,000 today in a blinding white out blizzard from Fargo to Columbus Montana. Last summer my fuel gauge pegged out at zero and the check engine light came on. The Chevy dealer told me that the sending unit cost $8.00 and the labor was $2200.00 as they have to pull the transmission to get at it. If any of you have had this problem or ever do, here is the fix: Go to the auto parts store and buy a code resetting meter. Every time it pegs out, erase the code and ht gauge will work just fine. Do it enough times and it gets tired of failing and life is good. This fix will cost you $69 instead of $2208.00

Dump some techron in it for a few tanks... used to work on the C5s (wonder if it would here)

^^^ Possibly. Gas gauges fail if the gas has too much sulphur. If so, they recover after using better gas for awhile. Happened a couple times on my C5 but fortunately not on my C7 yet.

I'm really sorry to hear that there are possible sending unit issues with C7's. I previously had a C6 and had to cough up close to $2k to have it repaired. A lot of C6 owners had the same problem.
From my extensive research while wrestling with my C6 issue I found the following advise:
Always use Top Tier gas
Try to always keep MORE than 1/2 tank of gasoline. Once the tank (in total) is below 1/2 the passenger side tank is totally empty which expedites a corrosion process.
My C6 experience started with a gas gauge failure when I filled up. After I consumed about 1/2 gallon of gas the gauge performed correctly all the way to empty. Eventually I had to use more gas from a full tank and ultimately the unit totally failed.
If you are experiencing a sending unit that is slightly corroded I would immediately put a bottle of techron (total system cleaner) along with the next few fill ups. You may be able to reverse the issue.
When my C6 was repaired GM had already 'improved' the part in some was and a different part number was used.
OP, please keep us posted.

Techron Full Fuel System Cleaner every 4-5K miles has been recommended to prevent this from happening. There's a good write-up here somewhere from a senior Corvette tech, but I don't have time to look for it now. Running only Top Tier™ gas also is a good preventative measure.

I own a 2014 C7 which after filling up the gas tank had the fuel gauge drop to 0 as well as the digital gauge showing - - - instead of miles left to empty. There are no failure codes associated with the gauge showing 0. Apparently this is a common problem as I read on forums many other C7 owners have had the same issue. I also read that the repair by a dealer will be expensive, but as I love the vehicle I took it to my dealer (Village Chevrolet in Minneapolis, MN) and was told they wanted $175.00 to diagnose the problem first. As I asked for a ballpark price to repair, I was told they have done several fuel sensor replacements and the cost will be just a bit above $4,000.000 – yes that is a bit above four thousand Dollars! So how can the C7 design be so bad that most of the drive train and rear axle has to come off before they can start taking down the fuel tanks? My vehicle has 17,000 miles and has always been driven on COSCO premium fuel. I am ready to dump the car and purchase something else non-GM related. Where do you go to get it repaired for $2,000?
