Default 2019 Corvette Production Why is GM Doing This?

What is GM thinking? I just did a search on cars.com to find how many new Corvettes are sitting unsold?

2016 295 Cars
2017 6,757 Cars
2018 2,779 Cars

GM is going to have to put some kind of big rebates to move these cars? I think it's going to take at least 20% or more off to move this inventory? If there isn't any big discounts why would anybody buy a 2016-2018 when you could just get a 2019 for very close to the same price?

The Top 10 Corvette dealers current new Corvette inventory

1. Kerbeck 179
2. McMulkin 206
3. Criswell 115
4. Les Sanford 166
5. Bomnin 82
6. Matick 90
7. Hendrick 105
8. Classic 74
9. Hendrick 62
10. Van 27

When these guys start turning down allocations then GM will have to do something to move cars sitting!!!

Seriously . . . why has this become a tax reform discussion? Go to OT and knock yourselves out.

Meanwhile the over production totally screwed existing owners. When I bought I went new because the delta between new and low mileage used was very small. I could now buy a new similarly equipped Z06 for less than what I paid for our Stingray. And the amount the dealer offered me for trade in was laughable. ...so to the aftermarket mods I go.

Looks to me as if GM has done a great job of whittling down the supply that existed 4-5 months ago. The current supply is less than 1/3 year's production capacity or about a 4 month supply. Not very long ago, it was much bigger than that.

They overbuilt to plan for the lengthy plant shutdown, and now they're back to pretty normal in-stock numbers.

Good info. Thanks!

Question: What do these inventory numbers mean in terms of potential incentives? Historically, is this an unusual situation in terms of inventory, or not that far from the norm? (I know that the early intro of the 2019s poses a variable never encountered previously.)

I think GM has a business plan and they know what they are doing. The few Corvette owners on this forum may not like it but in reality it matters not one bit to GM.

I'm a potential buyer at 30% off MSRP for a base Stingray.

If Congress comes out of their deep sleep and passes a tax bill it could result in a big uptick in economic activity. If that happens we probably won't remember this conversation.

The MY19 was going to come at some point, it is not like these cars were never going to get built. Just starting a little early. To me this means that the MY20/21 car will be the C8.

Hahaha...that part right there, that was funny. I agree that the tax code needs a comprehensive overhaul, and it's long overdue, but what's being proposed is ridiculous nonsense. Flat tax, no loopholes, individuals and corporations...that's when I start to buy into the idea of tax reform.

Oh yeah...buy a new Corvette and MAGA!

Heck at 30% off MSRP I am a cash buyer for a 1LT base with M7. Prefer Red with red gut, transparent top and NPP

I somehow doubt it's gonna happen but a guy can hope lol

After 5 years building the same car with some new colors and using the ZO6 outer panels on a Stingray and calling it a Grand Sport is why sales have tanked. GM could have upped the HP and did a refresh like other brands do to keep their cars a little different. This is the same thing that they did with the C6 if you remember.

Hard to guess on the 2018 GM can idle the plant so production meets demand. Actually the unsold 16s are the dealers problem. The 17s will get the typical end of year promos. The danger is the demand won't justify production and the Camaro with its toddler back seats will replace it. The other is the price will have go up to make car line at least break even on the short term. It's just business, it's foolish to make anything to lose money on.

Smoke and Mirrors! The more they reveal that tax plan the more I see I’ll be paying more in taxes. Pure BS! As usual.

The ONLY fair way to tax is NO deductions of any kind. That’s right strip it back and reduce the tax percentages for everyone including businesses. Why should anyone get special treatement with any kind of deduction.

Say no to subsidizing!

Let me guess, you own a Stingray, correct?

The Grand Sport even without the Z07 package is more of a Z06 with the LT1.

It will never be fair. Somebody will always be claiming their ox is being gored. Personally I think business taxes should be zero. Who is paying business tax, anyway? In case you hadn't thought about it here is a hint: the customer. Which means anybody who buys anything that comes from an organization that is taxed (otherwise known as everything).

It's amazing to me how many otherwise intelligent people have never grasped that concept. I wonder how much of the cost of a Corvette is corporate taxes built into the price?

In the fullness of time, the answer will become crystal clear, IMO.

My take is that GM is adding one or more models - very soon.
.
The move to 2019 MY ordering in calendar year 2017 is to compress the 2019 MY in time.

The compression of 2019 C7s being able to be ordered in 2017, is to wind down the C7 series in time for the ME/C8 release dates.

GM has already sold those C7 units on Chevy dealers' unsold on their lots.

GM will advance their rebates as necessary to move the unsold 2016s, 2017s, AND the 2018s/2019s to come.

In short - GM is advancing forward into introduction of new model & C series - regardless of the numbers of unsold C7 units that are stacking up.

Extremely exciting times!!

No One can complain about someone’s loopholes/deductions if there are NO loopholes/deductions. This is the simplest way to fix it, and just think NO lobbyists!!!

Really don't know why GM is coming out with the '19 MY 6 months early. Maybe this is the C7 swan song. Introduce the ZR1 and extend the last year of the C7 in order to bring out the C8 (Mid Engine as a 2020 model)

I don't really consider around 10,000 total new C7's sitting at lots as that much at all. Think of how many good incentives those dealers will give to unload those.

Seems GM has a good plan and is easily ready to pick back up from the planned plant shutdown.
