Mothereffer, you're towing around $750,000 worth of children and you're telling me my $65k car is a bad financial decision?
I've got a couple of eyebrows raised when I got my car (I'm 32). I tell them the secret is no kids, a paid off (or close to paid off) home, good cashflow, and ensure you are covering your bases regarding retirement. After that, it depends on your personal risk level, because debt (if you choose to finance) is that: risk.

My answer would have been " Funny your daughter didn't complain last night"

I must live in a nicer part of the country....I've NEVER been asked what I'm compensating for, and especially by a total stranger.

I've never been asked that but recently had a man at a gas station say something to the effect of "What's an old guy like you doing with such a hot car." (I'm in my 70's) We both laughed.

Also, when I informed my insurance company in 199 that I had bought my new C5, there was a pause on the line and then "Midlife crisis?".

What am I compensating for? Nothing I hope. It does seem a little cold out here though.

Apparently I look at questions like that a bit differently than most of you. It seems to be a way of striking up a conversation on the spur of the moment. The usual ensuing conversation indicates it wasn't meant to be rude or offensive.

On a side note, my license plate "2FRISKY" seemed to generate interest from attractive, middle aged women that wanted to know if the tag was about me or the car

I wished I'd had a more clever response, but the best I could do in the heat of the moment was:

"I dunno, but it must be tiny because this car is awesome", and I left.

Of course, later I thought I could have worked my size 13 4E shoes into the response, but thinking "What I should have said" later rarely helps!

Next to "mid life crisis" this is probably the most common cliche, so I'm curious what comebacks others have used...

Any good ones to file away for next time?
I'd say I am compensating for all the lesser cars I have driven.

Here's an answer that is sure to land:

"I like a car that matches my good looks. Since we're on the subject: What are you doing to compensate for your ugliness?

Now that is a very good point! Tone of voice and facial expressions are everything. The questioner could just be feeling playful.

True, however the questioner may want to consider better ways to initiate conversation.

I've had the 'mid-life crisis' comment a couple of times, I just reply 'no, mid-life success do you have any other questions'

Since I own a Z51, my response usually is:

"If it was that small I'd have a Z06"

or something like

"I enjoy not having any savings" or "you only live once" or "no time like the present to enjoy life"
