Default DIY oil change or dealer...?

Now that I've completed my 5th free oil change in the past 24 months, looking at paying for upcoming oil changes myself.
Had excellent oil change experiences at my Chevy dealer where I bought.
Ya'll know what the approx dealer charges for the Mobile 1 synthetic oil & filter?
Since my wife now no longer allows me to get under the Rhino ramps & change the oil myself, thinking of paying local shop $20 to do the oil change with my provided Mobile 1 (I still have 3 five-quart jugs) 5-30w. This shop has walk-under bays & has done oil changes all my family (wife & kids' also) cars over past 20 yrs, including a few for my previous C5 . Hope they can service this C7 with no problems.

Also, what's the best replacement oil filter brand for C7?
AC Delco, $4?
Bosch, $7?
Fram, $5?
K&N, $8?
Mobile 1, $13?

Thoughts...?

Thanks,

I use WIX oil filters in all my cars. I had a problem with ACDelco filters leaking at one time ( I think because they tried to make the base too thin and it deflected), so I switched to Wix and never had another problem.

I also use Valvoline Synpower in place of Mobil 1 so I only have one brand of oil to keep up with. They have 300,000 mile guarantee against oil related engine failures. Even out performed Mobil 1 in a standard cam wear test. Technically, Mobil 1 failed the test.

If you have dry sump, even some dealers do not know how to get oil level right.. If you have wet sump, the local shop could do it without problems if you can keep them from over-tightening plug and filter.

I used my local dealer for my 500 mi oil change for the Z51.Only reason was to have it on record that it was done by a dealer for warranty purposes.

After that,I always do my own on all my cars.

I too favor Wix filters(XP) but may use the ACD PF64.

I'm not going to start an "Oil" posting war.We all use what we feel is best.

The oil I use Meets & Exceeds the dexos spec. Many oils have chosen not to pay the dexos license fee.As long as your choice meets the spec, you are good to go.

EDIT.Some Chevy dealers are open on Sat morns for simple service.I've seen advertised $29.95 for up to 6 qts of reg oil.

I guess I am lazy or just have no desire for diy oil changes or anything else. Very fortunate to have a dealer with a proven track record and one I trust. So oil change time make my appointment, have a coffee and a donut and let the tech do his thing.

With such a long powertrain warranty, one thing to consider is that having it done by a dealer will eliminate questions about complying w/ scheduled oil service, the records of which will invariably be examined in the case of a powertrain failure. Theoretically, keeping your oil and filter purchase receipts suggests a DIY owner has kept up, but it's not definitive proof. A "Jiffy Lube" job is more definitive proof, that it was changed in accordance w/ specs, but doing it at the dealer makes it an official part of GM's maintenance record for that vehicle, eliminating all questions.

I've often wondered what happens in such situations. As for me, as long as the powertrain and extended warranties are in effect, I will only use Mobil/Dexos-approved oil and GM-approved filters, and have it done at a dealer to eliminate any possibility of questioning.

Start with buying two 5-qt. jugs of M1 from Walmart and partake of the generous rebate currently offered. See a recent discussion here. It has surfaced every six months for at least three years and it should keep most owners in bargain-priced oil as long as the rebates keep coming. Be advised that Walmart doesn't display any rebate forms or promos, so you'll have to buy it, then visit the Mobiloil website. You can submit your rebate on-line or via mail.

As for filters, any high-end filter, preferably one with synthetic media, will work fine. Fram has somewhat deservingly earned a bad rep for selling cheap and often poorly made filters, but the Fram Ultra (XG10060) has excellent reviews and is priced at $9 at Walmart. The Mobil1 rebate also includes their synthetic filters, so you could take advantage of that, too.

Wow, what a coincidence that my dealer just emailed a $49.95 oil change special. Of course, it didn't apply to Z51 Corvettes. That price for Mobile 1 & AC Delco filter is $140. But the 15% off any maint service coupon applies....

I just had mine changed at the Dealer - they charged $129 which seems reasonable to me for dry sump. I have confidence in them as they do a lot of Corvette sales and service. Plus it's too much hassle to deal with the used oil and my time has value. I also agree with the comment regarding service records. This way the same dealer that has done all my maintenance can deal with any warranty issues, should any arise.

If you break it down though, it really isn't that reasonable. You can get 10qts of M1 from Walmart for $44, and an AC Delco filter is about $5. So that's a grand total of about $49 worth of materials (the dealer probably pays even less than that for those materials too). The dealer is now charging you $80 labor to do a job that takes them at the most a half hour to do (and probably much less). That's outrageous.

I would try to find a dealer that would allow you to bring your own materials and just charge you a flat $20 or $25 fee to do the oil change. About 15 years ago I had an aftermarket warranty on a Firebird that required professional oil changes and I paid a local GM dealer $20 and brought my own oil and filter.

My local Chevrolet dealer (Bravo Chevrolet & Cadillac) charges $100 to complete the oil change.

Yesterday I changed oil in the C7 and the Chrysler on my gravel driveway. Rhino ramps for the Chrysler and jack stands for the Vette. PIA but this 65 year old can crunch, bend, slither and crouch still. Feeling a wee bit sore today.

I do my own oil changes. I don't have to worry about incorrect lifting. I know Mobil 1 was used. I know the filter is actually changed, and not over-torqued. I know oil wasn't spilled everywhere. I know both drain plugs were pulled and not over-torqued. I know the correct process was followed, and filled to the correct amount.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the only way to ensure the job is done correctly.

How many quarts of oil are needed for a NON-Z51 2015 MY?

I understand it to be 7 quarts.

Confirm.

I'm not trying to be a smartass, but aren't most labor rates at a garage around $100/hr or more? So 30mins is $50 + the $50 you estimate an oil & filter cost you at Walmart = $100. $29 isn't that much to,cover the overhead of the business in my opinion? And as far as bringing your own parts to have a garage install them, my father owned a garage when I was growing up and his response to that request was, "do you bring a steak to a restaurant & ask them to cook it?"
I'm just saying people are in business to make money. If their prices are too high and/or their service is poor, no one will patronize them & they go out of business.

I haven't change oil in any of my cars in years so don't plan to change the oil in my C7 either. Paying ~$80 to have the dealer do it works for me.

I do my own, use Mobil-1 5W-30 and Mobil-1 filters. Just completed my 12th change at 55,000 miles (changed at the first 500 and then every 5K mark afterwards) Note that my 500 mile change was done long before the service advisory to change at 500 miles for Z51s was released, as I purchased mine in October 2013. Also, my car is a base model, not a Z51, so would not have mattered. I always change at the first 500 miles on any freshly built engine.

Even though it had the available free oil changes, I never used those. Like others have posted, do it yourself and you know that it is done right, plus gives you a good chance to check on other items under the vehicle. Cost runs around 56.00 (two jugs of M1 plus the M1 filter).

My wife went to Meijer's ( kinda like a smaller Walmart ) to pick op on Groceries and such. She knows I use Mobil 1 and Mobil filters. They had the 5 Gal at $23,99. Mobil 1 Filter at $6.99 on sale. She bought two 5 Gal and one filter. She signed up on the Meijer web sight for ( M-perks ) which gives a 15% discount on every gen item purchase. We got $3.60 off each 5 gal, .74 cents off the filter. She then applied for the Mobil rebate . It's a win win,
