when Valentine first added laser detection they had to make the unit about 3/16" thicker. In newer models they were able to go back to the original case size. This happened years ago.

I don't know...
Maybe pay $100 more for new and just keep the old one to pass on to friends or family.
It is still the best detector they will ever get....

They should have a better trade in program, or donate old ones to poor needy Mustang drivers (like me years ago...)

Well, at $638 for the Escort, it needs to kiss me goodnight too! The updated V1 is much better at ignoring junk signals and you can program out anything that you REALLY consider to be an irritant. Escort jumped on the arrow thing like stink on manure when the patent expired. They knew it was a good feature!
My only grump about V1 is the fact that they use red for all the lights. I can't tell at night which red light is screaming at me to slow down. If there were a different color for the 4 types of radar, that'd be great. Laser doesn't count. Laser says you just got a ticket so pull over and take it bravely!

I have upgraded every few years. The current version reduces false alerts quite a bit, and has interesting programing options via your phone if desired. I tweak the scans, and essentially cut off X and K for my area. In the last 10 years, I have only seen one K that was actually a speed check.
Great forum here if you are interested: LINK
For location, I used to mount by the mirror, but then I changed to this approach a few years ago. For sensitivity, I find no change other than obscuring detection of radar from the back--which is pretty unlikely anyway. I like the easy left-hand access to the volume and mute buttons, and it does not obscure the upper windshield. Easy wiring, of course. I used Fuse 38 in the rear fuse box.

Really? I have one near the original and the latest edition which are exactly the same. I'd like to see a picture of the interim unit, never seen one.

Definitely worthwhile to update. I have had two Valentines forever. They are terrific. Can't beat the engineering and workmanship. Plus, Customer Service has always been very helpful. Not sure if your 10 and 20 years old units have laser detection.

I don't see much of the false alarms. Still get the K band "your speed is" **** though in the construction zones!

Replaced 7 and 15yr old V1s last year. World of difference. False alarms made using either impossible. ended up just leaving them off. New models are a huge improvement. Worth the 3 bills, even x2 for me.

Best mount for me over past 23 yrs are the factory supplied suction cup mount.
Always paid local stereo shop $20 to run power cable (phone cord) from fuse box (or tap into rearview mirror lights) to top of pillars.
Replace the 2 clear rubber suction mounts once every few yrs, with no issues.

I tried Blendmount and got vibrations that drove me fug buck! I saw this a while back and did it and love it. Solid as a rock, no vibrations. Power from mirror or from console, your choice.

You might want to do a little more research on the V1 before posting...
