Not how I wanted to head into Turkey Day!
Made a major mistake yesterday as I pulled into my garage. I thought I'd set my ebrake and exited the car without doing so. As I pushed the button to lower the door, my car went rolling down my driveway and crashed right into my neighbors brand spanking new Tahoe. Damaged their rear bumper, mine has some pretty good damage to the rear fascias, both upper and lower, tail lights, rear passenger quarter panel, spoiler, rear hatch, and probaby more. This morning the rear camera didn't work, and the front fascia looks misaligned.

OK, so I assume you have a M7 vs. an automatic since you didn't put it into park. However, did you put the car into gear (preferably 1st)? That would go a long way to preventing it from "rolling away" unless your driveway is rather steep.
Anyways, sorry for your misfortune.

I used to leave my car in first, but have read its not good for the trans. Since then I have had something similar happen, but without any damage.

Burning Brakes
It's not going to hurt the car. Compare the stress of holding the car from rolling up or down a hill when parked, to the stress when you run it up to 4000 RPM and dump the clutch. For example.
Sorry for the OP, hope it all gets fixed OK.
Lesson learned - use both the transmission and the parking brake.

Parking (Manual Transmission)
Before exiting the vehicle, move the
shift lever into 1 (First) or
R (Reverse), and apply the parking
brake. Once the shift lever has been
placed into 1 (First) or R (Reverse)
with the clutch pedal pressed in,
turn the ignition off and release the
clutch.

1st if parked uphill with front tires turned away from a curb; Reverse if down with tires toward the curb........... Sorry for your misfortune OP. It will be a lifelong, funny story.

Sorry to hear about the incident.
I too have always kept manuals in gear.
Chevy dealer told me to keep Vette in R when parked as to not have systems put a drain on battery when not in use for a few days+.

Safety Car
This is a great argument for a feature I would have thought would have been implemented. Why does the vette not automatically put on the eBrake when you park. IOW, if the car is smart enough to know you're exiting (as evidenced by the fact that it knows to go to the Easy Exit position for the seat), then why not automatically apply the eBrake? The only argument I can see against this is that perhaps you, for some odd reason, don't want the eBrake on at the moment. OK, fine. But I think that would rarely be the case. And the solution could easily be that if you want to turn off the car and exit the vehicle but still want the eBrake disengaged then a simply push down on the eBrake would remedy that. How often would that be the case?
Plus, I've learned that if you don't apply the eBrake when you parked the car, later when you enter the car and push start your seat will not go to the pre-assigned position. This would not happen if the above were implemented.
Seems to me that this would be an easy fix and a software fix at that (maybe not...)
Sorry to hear about your accident though. Keep us updated as to its fix...

Go Canes!
Yes, M7 and no, I usually don't place it in gear when I'm parked. My driveway has a slope, and once in motion, I couldn't react fast enough. The car was halfway down the driveway before I even noticed. My neighbors were super cool, even more concerned about my car than their own. It's mostly embarrassment, this is a new construction development and I hadn't even met them yet. Very awkward way to say "Hello, I'm your neighbor, and I think you need to step outside".
