WiFi hotspot, who uses it?

It would be a neat idea for a SUV where you have a family on tablets. In the Vette, it's only me 99% of the time so I don't personally benefit from a hotspot. I also did some testing and compared to my phones, the service wasn't any faster so the larger antenna wasn't a benefit.

This article supports your position: http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/2...-usage-goes-up
"Not surprisingly, the vehicles with the highest data usage patterns are pickup trucks that may be used for business out in the field, away from desktop PCs and fax machines, and SUVs with lots of seats, where it’s likely the back seat occupants are streaming video or audio in addition to surfing the web."

I use my phone as a WiFi hotspot. I'm out of contract with Verizon so I get a crazy good deal for the max gigs a month (basically I pay what everyone else pays for the smallest package because I'm not in contract anymore).

If it had some technical advantage over a cell phone, maybe I'd use it, but its useless and about 5 years too late. Typical for auto companies who cannot keep up with the pace of mobile technology.

Only time I have used it is when I went on vacation to NYC and blew through my 30GB plan (16 year old on the plan, what can I say.) When I got home I used the car's wi-fi to stream MLB to listen to the Royals feed and to listen to Pandora.

I think the only time I used it in my 2016 Tahoe was when my granddaughter was in the car using her Ipad. I left it expire. Why have two cell contracts??

My understanding is that the antenna in the vette is much more sensitive then what is on your phone. So if you live on the outskirts of cellular or regular drive where the signal is weak, hot spotting could make sense.
Whatever the price is per GB might be pretty sweet cruising down highway 395. Just saying.

It seems that if you want to use google to set a new destination on the android auto, you have to have wifi on the car. (Provided you don,t want to use your phone while you are driving.) Does this make sense?

Wonder if GM/Onstar is watching this post because they have to realize by now the whole thing is a fail for that price...
Now if they combined XM/Onstar/WIFI together under one decent price, they might have a chance!

Used it during the OnStar 3 month trial period during our 9 day trip out west. My wife was able to look up restaurants, hotels, review ratings get telephone #'s and make reservations, etc. It did come in handy and I would renew it again if we were going on another long trip. Other than that I will not renew it when staying local.

I added it to my AT&T plan for the extra $10. It is convenient when using a tablet or a friend is traveling that may not have a strong cellular signal on their phone, but it is redundant if you use the hotspot built into your smart phone.

The only feature I want with Onstar or 4GLTE is to unlock my doors with my phone. That's it. I would almost never take my keys with my anywhere. It would be glorious.
Other than that, I've probably had Onstar in my cars for over a decade and once was even tempted to use it.
