Default Do your brakes squeal sometimes?

My 2014 Z51 with 7700 miles brakes recently started squealing once in a while at slow speeds. I never noticed it before but lately it happens once in a while when I go out for a drive. Does anyone else notice their brakes squealing or is their something I need to have serviced? Thanks Dave

My brakes squeal coming to a stop whether braking in forward or reverse. Can be loud at times. Happens to me when the discs are hot and the weather is humid.

If brakes are cold or wet, you can get a low frequency grabbing/groaning sound on light application... this is just normal changes in friction.

A high-pitched squealing, however, is not normal... there may be a stone, or other piece of debris on the brake pad, the pads may be worn out, or they may be rubbing against the caliper pistons...

Sometimes, lubricating the back of the pads can cure this.

So far on the 2016, nothing. My 2008 and the Focus squeak(ed) at low speeds with light brake application, but not consistently. I figure I needed to grease the back of the pads.

Yeah, squeals on the last half turn before stopping. Embarrassing at times. It's done it since shortly after I got it. Very intermittent. Heard a lot of people complaining about it. Gonna get Carbotechs when these wear out so as to also reduce brake dust. But, at 9000 miles, on a 2014, it might be a while!

I have the same issue with 5500 miles.

Only after it has been in the rain or after I have washed it. It is fine after two or three stops.

My 2014 Z51 started squealing like a "stuck pig" on some slow speed stops at 1000 miles. I bedded the brakes per the Owner's Manuel for Tracking. However rather than ~20 repeats I use 8 to 10. Squealing stopped.
An article on bedding noted you need to use the brakes aggressively on occasion to keep a uniform thin layer of pad material on the rotor surface. Could account for your issue at 7000 miles. Suggest you bed the brakes.

I lived with the OEM pad brake dust for 1 year. Had to clean my black wheels about every ~100 miles or the dust was hard to remove. Finally switched to Carbotech 1521's. Waited a year too long. Easy to swap pads. Now I only wash the wheels when I wash the car. IMO it's 80% less dust and what is there washed away quickly. As long as your not tracking they are the pads to get, IMO. Have had no noise from the first time I installed them about 1 1/2 years ago. They stop just as well and even better when cold.

Non Z51-my brakes only squeel when I start her up and back out of the garage when she is cold and that happens only occasionaly. Other than that-no squeeling at all-just name and serial number.

No squealing on my '16 Z51 (yet?) at 1600 miles. But the dust! Like Jerry, my black wheels are a mess after as little as 100 miles. I am just not that much into detailing the car to have to clean the wheels every week.

So I have ordered a set of the Powerstop Z26 Extreme carbon/ceramic pads. Several reports here of good performance and low dust. Plus at ~$125 for the set from just about all the major vendors (I got mine at Rock Auto) a downright bargain. I am going to inspect the rotors and give a light sand if they need it... and bed the new pads IAW Powerstop's directions and hope for no squealing. I'll keep the OEMs in case I ever decide to go to the track.

The only vehicle I have ever driven with the low speed squealing is my parents' 2008 Chevy Colorado. If some C7s are doing that I feel your pain. Very annoying and embarrassing. I only managed to alleviate it temporarily by scuffing up the rotors on a visit... but the squealing always comes back. Sees some vehicles just are gonna squeal.

No squealing at 16K miles. Take your car to the dealer.

My '14 Z51 had noticeable squeals within the first 100 miles-really embarassing-it sounded like an old garbage truck when pulling up to a stop sign. I waited for a couple hundred more miles then bedded the brakes as instructed and they've been quiet ever since. At the time when mine was new (Oct. 13) it seemed that a number of us had the problem right away-showing up at the 7,700 mile stage is surprising unless they've accumulated a glaze from lack of hard stops. I'll do a couple of aggressive stops every other week or so and maybe that has helped keep the squeal from returning.

This has been covered several times; just before coming to a complete (E-Z) stop the rear pads have very little pressure on them so they start to vibrate (squeal). Pull the rear pads and lube the metal to metal area's (side of pads mostly) without getting any lube on the rotor or pad material.

I have found this stuff to work the best and is easy to obtain at most auto stores;

Thanks for the advice I do not make a lot of hard stops so I will try bedding the brakes and see if that resolves the problem.
