That's actually not bad. For those who know how to actually drive a manual properly (e.g. without slipping and abusing the clutch) it should go well over 100K miles minimum. I'm not talking about babying the car either. You can achieve that kind of longevity and still drive the car the way it was built to be driven.

The $3500 sounds about right. I was told that it is almost easier to pull the motor to swap it. Im sure we'll start to see guys swapping soon, with all the supercharger installs, clutches aren't going to last that long.

Leave the torque tube and tranny in.
Just checked the Service Manual, yep looks like you can keep the driveshaft etc mostly in place but there are three pages of "remove the radiator, disconnect the air conditioner components and remove the refrigerant etc etc etc!"

The above reminded me of what my Uncle, who managed a large Chevy Service Department, told me as to why the mechanics hated the Corvair! They knew how to beat the allowed Chevy Service times for a given job in an inline 6 or V8. They didn't follow the book, used approaches as outlined were used at two Guys Garage. Then they could make a good commission, even if they had to leave off a hard to access, none critical bolt. They didn't have those tricks figured out for a Corvair.

I recall when I was adding headers to my '67 Corvair there as a bolt on the sheet metal engine cover that I couldn't get back in. Called my Uncle who asked his best mechanic to come to the office. I could hear his reply when my Uncle asked, as said, "with a tricky hand!" Same Uncle who helped my assemble the Olds engine I stuffed in my 1st car a '41 Ford Opera Coupe!

At a dealership you'll pay full price even if they do it quicker. A quality independent who has changed clutches in C7's may be cheaper. I recall my Uncle had one mechanic who was slow but did a very good job. He was concerned since he was taking up a service bay and was much slower than some others. However if my Dad needed something done we could not do, he'd recommend we take the car to this fellows house where he worked on the weekends, as the quality of his work was great!

I never had to replace a clutch on a car I drove (even one with 140,000 plus miles). However, the usual rule of thumb was that the dollars you saved by buying a manual would be paid the first time you had to replace a clutch. Here it's way more. Even with the reported troubles with some A8 C7s, the auto may be the less expensive deal in the long run.
