I test drove a8 stingray and you can use the paddle to shift up or down in any mode as U guys well know that have them. The salesman thought U had to be in M mode to use the paddles but we found out differently. Dumb question, what is the rev match?

Engine RPM is raised to a speed that allows the car to go to a lower gear and not cause the car to jerk the transmission for the transition to a lower gear.

If you drive in 4th and select 3rd, the rpms will go up to allow you to maintain the same MPH go to a lower gear and do it smoothly.

Thread resurrect warning

I knew this was going on with my A8. It doesn't matter if I'm in Drive or Manual, as soon as I start blipping paddle downshifts, it'll start rev matching. Love bringing it down to 4th->3rd->2nd (appropriately), that's where magic happens (I think).

And if you hold the downshift paddle in it will drop to the lowest suitable range for your speed. If you continue to hold it while your speed is dropping it will continue to downshift to the lowest acceptable range as the speed drops.

And if you try to select a range too high or too low it will simply snark back at you "shift denied"

It does an OK job but is still quite jerky when not in performance shifting mode. I would be embarrassed to shift like that in a manual transmission.
