Default Has anyone actually powder coated their wheels??

Been several posts over the past year or so about excessive chipping of the paint, especially on the leading edge of the spokes on our wheels. I have 5900 miles on my Z-51 (black wheels) and suffer from the same problem. Knowing that powder coating is much more durable, I am curious if anyone has actually had it done and what the results were. I'm interested in the following info.

1. How much was the cost to have the wheels powder coated?

2. How many miles do you have since the powder coating?

3. Is there any evidence of chipping at all?

4. Are you more than happy with the results vs the costs involved?

Thanks, Dick

My new wheels are powdercoated instead of painted and on a previous car I had them powdercoated. Depending on where you go you could be anywhere between $300 to $500.

While powdercoating is much more durble than paint, its not indestructible and can still chip. It is definitely worth the cost involved, especially considering how easily the OEM wheels chip.

This is a great answer, we have a great powdercoater here in Fort Lauderdale. (http://www.jaspowdercoating.com/) The charge is about $75 on wheel and they look immaculate. Are they indestructible? Absolutely not, but they're stronger than anything GM can put out in terms of durability and they are absolutely glossy. From the premium wheel manufacturers, they virtually use all powder coat clear and my forge lines are just immaculate in their appearance. Here's a pic from my neighbors C6 that is a couple years old and they still look great. (lousy ipad pic)

If I were you I would p.m. MJW930 and ask him about his connection with the powder coder that a lot of manufacturers use including Honda etc.… Located in Jacksonville Florida.

Mine were also about $75 each and they have about 2000 miles with no chips. Have them mask off the bolt holes or the lugnuts will stick to the paint.

I actually own a powdercoating shop specialized on wheels refurbishing....if you do it RIGHT (full paint stripping, mild sandblasting, epoxy powder and clear) they will last forever !

I had mine done about 3 months ago. No chips yet. The $300 - $500 estimate is REALLY high, if you are just powder coating (no machining), $100/wheel should cover it.

Here are mine. Started as the base silver 5 spoke wheel, powder coated black and then machined the spoke faces and lip and then clear coated. $210/wheel which included taking the wheels off, tires off, doing the work on the wheels, mounting and balancing the tires, and re-install the wheels on the car. Took 4 days, I couldn't be happier with the look. Done by Prince Wheel Services in Monroe, NC

I did not say $300 - $500 per wheel anywhere in my statement.... if you paid $100 per wheel then you were right in the middle of my estimated cost.

That's the look I wanted last year but the cost was $300/wheel because they didn't have a machining template. The full powder coat works fine for me.

What color are your wheels and it appears you have metallic flake added.

It is Anthracite Metallic with clear coat. I wanted a color close to Cyber Gray and this works fine. The standard silver wheels detracted from the NRB color. Black didn't work for me.
