Question of the Week: How Fast Have You Been Caught Driving?

Burning Brakes
When I was young I got nailed for doing 101mph in a 45mph construction zone. Sounds really bad, I know. Here is the full story.
I was in my newly supercharged Chevy Z24. (yes, a supercharged 2.4L z24 was a dealer installed option kit.) The car was faster than the vettes of the day.
Soo, 2 guys were racing each other on the highway... in these beat up rusted out sedans that had oil-smoking V8's , wobbling tires and busted suspensions.
I decided to blow past them at WOT just to get the hell out of there before something bad happened. The construction zone was actually new super smooth fresh pavement (probably the reason the guys chose it to race on).
Over the next hill the cop nailed me. Dang it! I pulled over immediately. Had I been patient , he would have caught the other two jerks rather than them rolling by at the speed limit since his lights tipped them off to stop fooling around. I explained all this to him. He said he wouldn't write me up for reckless op because I didn't make him chase me. I got off with a no points and a small fine.

I lent my C7 to my middle son to go to Boston on business. When he returned he told me he got stopped by a trooper for speeding. When I asked how fast he was going he said "Just over a ton but that isn't why I'm telling you. The cop took your registration, insurance card and my license back to his car. After twenty minutes he returned and told me he could take me away in hand cuffs but he dropped your registration between his seats and he can't seem to find it. He didn't give me a ticket and said he would mail you your registration once he finds it." Ten days later I got my registration in an envelop with no message or return address.

The last time I got caught speeding was in 1975, at the time I just picked up a 70 duster with a 340 and a 3.90 gear and I was going for lunch with a friend showing off the car.
Thank God no one ever caught me when I had my 440 6 pack cuda.
I got on this straight road and jumped on it when I crested the hill the state trooper nailed me, a week later in a 72 olds wagon I got another ticket on the same stretch of road going the opposite direction.
The 1st ticket was 75 in a 55 the second was 70 on the same road, lost my drivers license for a month but never mentioned it to no one and just continued on like nothing happened.
These were the first and last times I ever got caught

Melting Slicks
In 1995 I owned a '95 Vette but have two incidents, both while riding my Honda CBR900RR sportbike.
Ticketed - riding with friends about 11pm in Anchorage, AK and we were the only vehicles on the road and were taking turns doing wheelies. I held my wheelie for awhile and when I put the front tire back on the ground I noticed the other bike tail-lights hauling the mail waay down the freeway. Next I noticed the State Trooper screaming up behind me and he was not pleased (looking back, I can't really blame him). I was clocked at 82pmh in a 55 on one wheel. The trooper did offer to let me off if I told him who the other three bikes were that fled. This was the last ticket I've received.
Non-ticketed - Something I thought only happened in movies or young boy fantasies. An AK State Trooper came up to our riding group at a rest stop and was admiring our bikes and said he also had a sport bike. At the end of our talk, he offered to let us have one pass at his radar gun on this long straight south of Anchorage (past Girdwood for those of you who know Alaska).
The trooper sat in his car while we went to the end of the straight and began our run. We blew by him one-at-a-time and then pulled over. Next thing I see is him with his lights on driving very fast up to us and I'm thinking he set us up and has us all on tape speeding and am sure backup is on the way and we're going to jail. I can't begin to describe the "pucker factor" I was feeling right then. Once he pulled up and got out he announced, "first bike, 155mph, 2nd bike, 162mph..." etc. I was clocked at 162.
Nowadays, I go to a couple HPDE each year and am seldom tempted on the street - too many people where I live and like my low insurance rates.

I remember getting a speeding ticket back in 1959 for doing 60 in a 60 MPH zone. It was in Arkansas and I was driving our 1959 Chevy pickup. I was driving along in a long string of cars on a two lane federal highway and the speed limit was 60 MPH, and the string of vehicles I was in the middle of was doing 60 MPH. I was pulled over because in Arkansas(at that time) had a statewide speed limit of 60 MPH for cars and 55 MPH for trucks.
it was the state police that nabbed me and they took me to jail in the nearest town(Carlisle) and held me until I could pay the fine. I didn't have enough money on me(I was 16 years old and never had more than two dollars on my person) so I had to call my mom(in Little Rock)to come get me out of jail. It was on a Sunday.
That left me with a bad taste I my mouth about cops for years.

The kid knew his Mother would eventually give him the car, which she did a year or two later. The Family had a pile of money.
Whatever they did to that old 390 (I think it was the 390) did the trick. I think that's why we were "test" driving it that morning.
It's only been 50 years or so, so the details are a bit cloudy, but I remember to this day the experience sitting in the back seat thinking we were all going to die.

105 in a 55 and I was already on driving probation.
I spent two weeks in county, lost my license for a year, and it cost me thousands in legal fees. Don't ever, ever, ever speed over 15 MPH in Virginia. The cops are out for blood and they will kick the dogshit out of you physically, legally, and financially.
Listen, and understand. That State Trooper is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are in handcuffs and your car is impounded.

I was driving on a back road west of Palm Beach FL in a new 1989 Trans Am Indy Pace car, the one with the Buick Grand National Motor.
There was a dump truck doing 25 in front of me in a 50 mph zone and double solid lines. When the passing lane became available I nailed it and as I just cleared the truck 2 things happened, my escort detector went on solid and I was up to 110 mph.
I nailed the brakes and just pulled over in the service lane, got out of my car and took out my wallet.
The trouper was already stopped a little behind me on the other side.
He backed up a few hundred feet to be along side of me and laughed and waved me on. I have been pulled over many times when I was young and have never had a bad experience with any law enforcement officer.
I believe if you cooperate and just be nice you can usually get away with a warning or a reduced ticket.

I have been pulled over a few times, but nothing worth mentioning.
No not just a southern thing.
I see 25+ cars just cruising in the left lane in about a 20-30 mile span. On a good day there will be 4-5+ sets of cars in both lanes going the same speed.
All the of that says nothing about some of the Utah Highway Patrol that cruise in the left land going under the speed limit to pull over the ones that go around on the right going the speed limit. Not many do that, but it still wrong.
in most situations i 100% agree. 9 times out of 10 around here i go with the "flow of traffic" which is consistently (everyday i drive it) an average of 15 - 20 mph over the posted speed limit. The speed limit on i26 north around columbia is 60 in most places and 55 in some, every morning the flow of traffic is at about 80+ mph in the passing lane, 75 - 80 in the middle lane and 65-75+ in the "slow" lane pending semis and merging traffic.
Honestly i could care less most of the time about the speed limit, but what really, and i mean really pisses me off, is people driving in the passing lane. Cruise control set below the posted speed limit in the passing lane with 10 cars behind them for no reason. Or two people driving side by side at the same speed. Every morning i see it 2 or 3 times and i get furious. It makes me mad even if i'm not the one trying to pass people, just seeing it will drive me nuts, and i think its mainly a southern thing.
Quit driving in the passing lane!

Been caught twice - once 155 in a 55 and the other 150 in a 55 - no tickets either time.

Of the three 'vettes I've owned (86,01,14), the '01 is the only one I've gotten a speeding ticket in (knock on wood! ), and that was for going 75 in a 65... ie, merging with traffic going 75 from an on-ramp. I was between two cars going the same speed and the cop decided to make an example out of me. Picked up a V1 before I even got the Stingray and it's saved my butt a few times already, particularly on the return trip from the NCM delivery.
And I definitely go faster than 75 in a 65....

HAHAH, oh my gosh man. That is almost 3 times the limit. haha.
My corvette is 33 years old, going on 34 with all original parts. That fastest I have been in that car is 78 and that was by accident. I try to keep it around 70 with 75 as a "this car is pissing me off" limit.

In high school, driving my dad's '72 chrome bumper LT-1 Stingray. 114 in a 55.
That LT-1 Stingray is what hooked me on vettes, and I've had a soft spot for those chrome bumper LT-1s ever since.
That cost me 300 bucks, which was a bid deal to me at the time. Was a lot of money for a teenager in the 80s.
