Default How to use dash cubby for GPS

Saved $795 and didn't buy the OEM Nav. But I do use and love my 4.7" RAZR w/GOOGLE maps.

What's are some ways I can mount my cell phone in the cubby for road trips.

Thanks in advance.

Sure looks like you have what I want, but I could use a few more details.

I'd rather use a phone mount that clips onto a vent....

It's a great idea. I really don't want my GPS exposed when my car is left unattended. The dash pocket is very nice. I bought a Magellan SmartGPS. It has a 5" screen but the total width of the frame is 6". The pocket is exactly 6.3". In order to get the snug fit, I just placed Velcro on each side......you can't see the Velcro. There are no wire protruding from outside the display screen. On top of that, I use the Power Bank battery which runs for at least 8 hours before charging again. And you could just charge the Power Bank battery inside your car. The display is available whenever you need it.....just push the button.

Another interesting idea. But over the weekend I came up with another thought. It's called "ESTER foam" you know the stuff used in expensive camera cases etc. Our IT department has ton's of this stuff laying around. I'm gonna rummage for a small section and then custom fit it to the cubby and my phone.

But of course I need a Stingray. My TPW is this week so hopefully I'll have a car to test my solution on soon.

I ordered a Garmin to add my .02 to this thread. it has bluetooth, so I'm hoping I can get audio directions over the radio.

Let's see.....GM Nav. $900 Integrated into the HUD and audio. Voice activated. Updates only with Onstar subscription. It's outdated ? Get a new car.

Amazon Garmin.....$169. Free traffic and lifetime updates. Voice activated. It's outdated ? Go on Amazon and get a new one.

Fore,

I like that unit a lot! I read about it after looking at your picture.

Could you not just power the unit from the USB port in the back of the cubby? That's what I do with my Garmin.

The Magellan Smart GPS also has an AV input. I'm thinking about how that could be used for a front camera for parking!

Mine take a bit longer to "acquire sats" but seems to work OK in the cubby, for those who asked.

Vatorman, I have a hunch the Bluetooth allows you to use the GPS as a speakerphone but probably wont SEND sound to a bluetooth device (like your C7)

I do a variation of the same thing. I only use GPS about once a month so it's fine. Great idea.

I believed that there is a power convertor for the mini-USB to USB connection. I did in fact read about it but I just wasn't sure of myself or the product. Just very little information to be confident about it. So, I just opted for the USB Power Bank Portable battery with carries 12,000 mgh whatever that is. A technician did a search for me on a Aluratek Portable Battery charger 3000 mgh.......and he said that unit holds about 3/4 hours before recharging. So if you do the math, 12,000 mgh should run around 10/12 hours. It is exactly a wallet size battery that fits perfectly in back of the GPS....as shown in my picture. In the future, I will conduct another research regarding the power only mini-USB to USB connection. In the meantime, this works great for me. PM me if you need further information

No need for any of that. USB is a standard 5V output. Just get a USB to mini cable (like above, or available in most USB power/connection kits for little $$) and plug in to the Port in the cubby.
