Default Will the paddle shift auto let you hurt the car?

The other day I was taking my 15 year old son for a ride and I was using and explaining the paddle shifters and he asked "so if you don't shift at the right time what happens". So I explained the redline and RPM's and such but I added that since it is an automatic I wonder if the cars computer would actually let you get to the point of engine damage.

I mean if I leave the car in first and just stomp on the gas and never shift will the car eventually shift for me to avoid damage?

Does anybody know the answer to that? I'm certainly not going to find out for myself

My understanding is that yes, unlike a manual transmission the automatic even, when using the paddle shifters, will shift the car for you when you are I danger of hurting the engine.

Nope. It won't let you hurt the engine though because it will hit the rev limiter if you don't upshift, and it won't let you downshift if it would exceed the rev limiter, so it won't let you overrev the engine on either an up or downshift.

Thanks, I did not even think of that. that would be like trying to shift into first gear while doing 75 or something....makes sense.

at auto- x last weekend, i put my auto in 1st, foot on floor and showed that i could not even hurt the car if i wanted to, drove the whole course wide open, 6600 rpm's ( except for turns, ect ), it was a good learning experience, also the car did not shut off the fuel as much as it reduced the amount of fuel, it was smooth not bang, bang, bang

The auto cars also rev match on downshifts (at least in Tr mode), so if it can't match the rpm during a downshift, it won't downshift.

I am not familiar with how this particular rev limiter works, but generally it is not a good idea to ride the limiter. At least in some vehicles, extended operation at the limiter has been claimed to damage the motor.

It won't let your over-rev it, but it will let you zing it to 6,600 rpm immediately after you start it, even in the cold - which can't be too good for it.
