Default Need a Nav experiment assistant!

I'm trying to get personal POIs from a USB stick to my Nav unit, like most other car nav units can do.

I have a file figured out, but I need someone NOT IN CT to try and download from USB stick to the nav unit.

I'm trying to document the process because the GM guys left some pages out of the Infotainment manual... really!

Once I figure it out, I'll provide the details on the forum.

An ideal test candidate would be someone with a Nav unit located in FL. My experiments so far seem to load locations into the Nav unit only if they are near CT.

The process would be:

download the attached file, named "testPOIS.txt" - (do this by right-clicking on the attached file and select Save Link as... to save on your computer.)
on a blank FAT32 formatted USB stick, create a folder named myPOIs
in the folder, put the downloaded file
rename the file to "testPOIS.csv"

go to your car
remove any USB stick that is plugged in
put car in ACC mode (hold start - don't press on brake pedal - 10 secs)
got to Nav app, wait for screen to settle, ie. map on screen

plug in USB stick with file in folder as described above
Nav screen will say "POIs found"
press DOWNLOAD
press NO to category question
wait a few seconds

You should now have a set of POIs listed at the bottom of the categories screen named MY POIS. Select that and you should see a set of POIS named TestPOIs. Press that and you should have some personal POIS loaded.

I need to know which POIS show up. Seems like for me, only close ones do. Here's the POIS I put in the file:

"Pepe's Pizza New Haven"
"Empire State Building"
"Mark Twain House"
"Washington Monument"
"Corvette Assembly Plant"
"Mystic Seaport Museum"
"DC Washington Monument"
"FL Disney World FL"
"Acadia National Park"

Please note: All of this is easily deletable after you try it. The "Delete My POIs" function works perfectly!

Thanks,
Ed

To the OP's question.

Chevy CS (and the Museum themselves ) told me it can't be done with the current firmware...

(don't ask me why they allow saving info to a USB with no way to restore it but that's how it is )

Kenhorse,

Whoever you talked to was wrong. So was the person I talked to. They did give me the hint that maybe the NEW (2014) Cadillac system was the same.

It is do-able. So far, I have done it about 25 times as I experiment with the process. Chevy CS was NOT able to do it until I told them how.

Their first problem is that they left a few pages out of the Corvette Infotainment manual. When I did a parallel read of the 2014 Cadillac Infotainment Manual, I discovered this and explained it to the person I was talking to at Chevy CS.

The second problem
is that the instructions in the Cadillac Info manual are wrong. The example they give points to someplace not in North America, I believe, so the system won't accept it.

The third problem is that the instructions in the Cadillac Info manual have the data in an incorrect syntax. The file is supposed to be a comma separated value file, but their example has the commas and quotes in the wrong place. (I'm a programmer who has used .csv files for years!)

Once all of that is taken into account, it works! I have about a dozen POIs under "My POIs" in my Nav system. They are POIs I used in my Dodge Journey and work perfectly in the Vette once the file is correctly formatted and loaded into the system.

My request for help is simply because it seems like when I try to add some new POIs, the ones near CT are recognized and the farther away ones aren't. I'm trying to determine why, so I can provide info to forum members. I'm not sure why some POIs are loaded and others are not. I'm not sure if they have inaccurate data or if the loading is selective if the distance from me to the POI is too far.

Anyone who is willing to try would be of great assistance to my efforts. NO risk involved - all loaded "My POIs" are easily deletable! As I said above, that part works!

Thanks,
Ed

ps. this is an extension of my "Trying to get some improvements on the Infotainment System going!" thread. Just trying to add useful info to the knowledgebase here on the forum.

c5eddiem, it works as you describe at the top. I downloaded your file, renamed it a .csv and put it on my USB stick under a folder named myPOIs. I'm in NJ and it showed the Empire State building at 39 miles and Pepe's Pizza New Haven at 99 miles. I'm thinking the other POI's did not show up because there must be a 99 mile limit. They may have all been loaded in the Nav but only showed me the ones 99 miles or less. I did a delete and they are now gone.

Just ran your test. Side note... I can confirm that you must first remove your music USB so the file info is the only USB present.

I successfully loaded your file and checked the listed POIs. I am in Raleigh, NC. Only two of the destinations were listed... Washington Monument and DC Washington Monument. Both are approximately 450 miles from my location.

For grins, I tried a text search for the other destinations. No luck.

Your hypothesis seems reasonable... It appears that only "close" destinations get added or displayed.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll give it a try over the next few days as I have time (I HATE jury duty )

Default pois

Hi Guy:

I did like you asked in your post; however my nav sys never saw the file.

I even reformatted the usb flash drive for FAT32. Checked the folder was named "myPOIS" and the file "testPOIS.cvs" (without the quotes)was in the folder with all the information you had for the places.

Don't know why the sys didn't see the file?

Any ideas?

Ed,
I see you have some good results, I am trying to run a test also, but unsure how to format my flash drive from My MACBOOK.
Maybe someone can help me out so I can try this POI test.

Thank you,
George

Aquavettes,

I think you renamed to .cvs It should be .csv

Also, it will be interesting to see if any of the locations are close enough to you to load (once it's a .csv file)

If not, I'll add an IN poi to the file tomorrow

Try that

Thanks,
Ed

Wow! Ed -- this is very impressive forensic computing to figure out all of those issues. Great job!

CaryKen,

It took me days for that light bulb to go on!

Interesting... I couldn't get Wash DC to load and it' only about 300 miles from me.

Good info from your test...trying to get some info in place so I can ask the right question if I ever get to talk to an Infotainment tech person.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
I found a youtube video, why didn't I think of that.

So I got the Flash Drive formatted, loaded your test destinations, and tried to load them to the Nav unit. It found the file but wouldn't load the destinations.
I will redoe it tomorrow from a Windows machine and give it a try.
This will be a cool process, if we can get it to work.
Thanks,
George

Ed, we don't have many test cases to work with here, but does it seem like the system is only listing the two closest destinations? It doesn't seem to be based on above/below a fixed distance limit.

CaryKen,

The limit isn't two because I have a dozen loaded into mine, but they do seem to have to be close to me to work.

I'll add a new test file with some locations close to Raleigh later today

Thanks,
Ed
