Default 8 Speed Auto vs 6 Speed Auto

There has been a lot of discussion about the 8 speed transmission vs the 6 speed. Much is said about the technical aspects (shift time, weight savings, etc), but so far I can't find anywhere that says what the MPG difference is. I assume it is better, but by how much?

Would GM introduce a new automatic shift transmission just for those technical reasons, or does the higher MPG and CAFE have anything to do with it? Any ideas?

Much like the new 7 speed, I'm sure the 8A will have more overdrive ratios to take advantage of the torque to improve the fuel mileage.

I assumed it would have better ratings for MPH, but I'm wondering how much? Does it really help a lot or just a little?

5% improvement in efficiency is what I recall from one of the press releases.
