Is a 500Hp "base" Corvette coming
#21
The Miata, which has sold almost 1,000,000 since it's introduction in 1989, has never had more than 178 hp. Appears that there is quite a segment of the sports car market that is not focused as sharply on HP.

Im sure there is more to it but I am kind of disappointed that the stingray only received a modest power bump of 25 w/o NPP, where is the Z-06 received a 120 hp bump.

That's what I was thinking. That's also why I'm thinking a power bump is in the base Vette's future. Especially if the new Mustang looses the weight they said it would loose, then it's power and weight may be too close to the base Vette.

500 HP for a car many will use as a daily driver? Impractical and unnecessary. While I haven't driven a C7 yet, my 08C6 with 430 ponies was more than enough to get me into trouble. How much more HP is needed for a car most will not track? Why not redirect the horsepower effort into other efficiencies that I'm sure will arise in this car's evolution.

So is 465, but I have yet to hear anybody complain that the base C7 comes with too much horsepower. I'm sure the typical Corvette customer wouldn't mind 500 horsepower, whether they use the car as a daily driver or not.

While most of us usually say you can never have enough horsepower; I think that we are getting to the point of diminishing returns. Traction is the problem.
In order for us to achieve the traction we need with 460 HP GM utilizes newly designed Michelin summer tires with a 220 thread rating.......not so good in cooler climates. Tire technology & traction controls have to keep up so that that any additional horsepower does not go up in smoke.
If you are spinning you are losing.

Mustang GT wont be loosing any significant weight and if any thing will probably gain weight.

The 2015 Mustang may also be very close in a drag race if you consider the gearing and wider sidewall (no run flat) and a 18 inch tire. Weight we'll see when the specs come out.
Performance cars are back big time. Mopar, Ford and Chevy are right up there with some good performance products. Chevy may have to "up its game" to keep the base Corvette from being nailed by a Mustang GT

500 HP from a 6.2L engine with todays technology is a jump shot. Expect it as sales of the C7 slump in the not so distant future. A base C7 with factory flywheel horsepower in the 500 range will happen. There are Boxsters and Miatas for those that find that to be "too much" horsepower.
