Save $1k or 1400 miles???
Hey guys,
Getting my C7 in next week and was considering flying to the dealer which is 1400 miles away and driving the car home. Cost for me in this scenario is around $500. Transport services are charging between $1400 and $1800 and state it could take a couple weeks.
So my question for you all is would you prefer saving at least $1k in shipping costs and having 1400 miles already on your car? I plan on keeping it for a few years so 1400 miles difference between, let's say, 32000 and 33400 isn't that big of a deal as opposed to the immediate psychological impact of 0 miles to 1400 already on the car.
P.S. Would be driving it from MO to AZ.

Im not going to buy one until I sit in one and see the comfort level. The last Corvette I owned was a 1984 model.
I would gladly buy you lunch just to sit in yours and see how it feels.

You should be able to get it transported much cheaper than that even in an enclosed trailer. I've got a quote from Red Carper/Magic Carpet transport for $1350 enclosed service from Atlantic City NJ to Los Angeles. Montway Transport was $1650. There were others that came in higher but I would check around a bit more. That said, 1400 miles would make for a nice break in run and give you some time to get familiar with the car too.
If it were me, the road conditions and weather would be one factor in making the decision. If the conditions were nice, I would seriously consider the drive.

I drove home to Phoenix from the museum - 1,808 miles of smiles. It's a great time to get the feel of the car and learn lots of it's features. The only question for me would be the weather for the drive. Good luck with your decision and enjoy!

I would do the drive without hesitation, I mean, that;s what this thing is designed for, right? I can't imagine weather on that drive being anything too ridiculous. Plus you would get to take the Stingray ala 'route 66'.

Thanks for the responses guys. It will not be snowing next week in MO so all I really have to battle with is the temps in the 30s for the first few hours of the drive. Any thoughts on how the tires will do in the cold temps? It's only for a few hours in those temps so I wouldn't think I'm risking too much...or am I?

Tires get slippery when they, not the air, get under 40. I found that overnight storage in my heated garage meant tires fine when I left on 28-30 degree morning, not so fine when I left business appt a couple hours later when air still 30 degrees so tires 30 degrees too.
So, for starters, have your dealer store it inside for delivery to you. That takes care of the first day and then second day you may need to drive cautiously until tires warm up.
Have fun! You will LOVE this car!

check the weather. no storms currently predicted. forecast clear in Springfield until the 4th, until later in Amarillo and Albuquerque.
some cold temps at night, but well above freezing in the day.

I would definitely do the drive but the only thing that would bother me is driving all those miles on the highway with nothing protecting the nose. If a few dings wouldn't bother you then I don't see any reason not to do the drive. If you wanted I'm sure the dealer would be glad to install a clear bra.

Instead of going through Missouri, head south and bring her home through Texas.

We have the same decision to make. Picking ours up in Idaho to drive back to Portland,Or area-mid January. We can fly in, but great friends offered to drive us up there and drive back with us. It depends on weather. We can have it trucked here for about $800-$1,200 (enclosed or open) Prefer to have the fun of driving it home!!!
