Default Unbelievable Gouging

Came across a beautiful black/black C7 Z51 7 speed roadster sold by Earth Motors in Carrolton, Tx on eBay and was enjoying perusing it until I happened to glance at the buy now price. Would you believe $99,888.00. Well I'm glad they weren't going to try to squeeze .99¢ out of the customer at least! Normally, I let stuff like this just slide but hey, a $30K market adjustment seems more than just a bit excessive. So I wrote them the following little note:

Helpful to know you guys operate this way so I put my friends and colleagues on notice in places like corvetteforum.com. There's capitalism and there's making a fair profit. And then again, there's just out and out pig s|h|i|d|t greed. Any question about where your dealership falls in that continuum? No? Didn't think so.

I hate it as a consumer but if consumers are willing to pay that it's difficult to blame dealers.

The question I have is, how do you talk them down from that? Or is it better to just turn right around and walk away?

If you're comfortable paying MSRP. Offer them MSRP and let them know you'll buy right now. Some dealers are OK with that, others aren't. If they aren't move on.

You don't - you just move on. That is not an offer to negotiate.
On the other hand, I have a local dealer to me who has a Z51 3LT on the showroom floor with a $5k market adjustment on it - and he told me it is really there because he doesn't want to sell the car because it is his showroom piece, but he will take orders (has a total of 18 allocations for 2014 Coupes and 7 Convertibles - 7 Coupes and 2 Convertibles still available) at MSRP -$1,000. He will sell the showroom car at MSRP when he receives an unsold allocation car.

I got mine at MSRP, although the dealer claimed they took some more off to come up on my trade. I work in Sales, so I know it's just some big shell game. They can tell me I got more for my trade by taking some off the MSRP or just offer me more for my trade.

I spoke to several dealers who had markups, but nothing more than $5K. The story was pretty much universal: "If you're serious and can buy today, we'll go down to MSRP".

If they're doing this on a halo car, imagine trying to negotiate with them on a DD. No thanks, they have shown their character and they have to live with the consequences. Not begrudging them trying to make a profit, and if some idiot wants to pay the markup that's fine too, but their selling practices will undoubtedly bleed over into other cars, so no thanks dealing with them.

You can check your trade with Blue Book or equivalent. Research your car's wholesale trade-in price; example - excellent = $30,000 if dealer gave more than, say $32,000 discount was $2,000.

I had a no haggle discount offer of 2500 off in July and it worked for me. Good offer on the trade too. Just got to shop and do some homework and look nationwide.

I've lived in north Dallas area for 30 years and never heard of Earth motors. Sounds like an eBay scammer if anything.

Right, the problem is not the seller, its the impulsive "got to have it regardless of the price" buyers that ruin it for everyone else.

Well, that is if you put up with the "market adjustment" bs. First thing out of my mouth besides I want that car is no markups or we are done here. It's that simple.

They are a used car dealer. I'm sure they laughed their butts off at your note.

Frankly, I wouldn't think of even looking on eBay for a 2014 Corvette, let alone getting too excited over whatever I found listed on there. Too many dealers have them at MSRP or slightly less.

Many forum dealers on here with C7s less than MSRP, no need for Ebay in this case.

This is a really interesting post b/c I agree with most of the posts here, except I'm "that guy". However, every story has it's own facts. I found my C7 on ebay from a Chevy dealer. And yes, they wanted $5k over msrp for my Z51 3LT. however, I was buried in a lease in my Porsche that I wanted out of. By the time I made the deal, between what they gave me on my trade (I checked it against Manheim dealer auction) as well as the tax credit on the trade, I was able to get into the car I wanted and out of the Porsche w/o getting crushed.
I never pay full retail...but I don't regret this deal for 1 second.
