C7 v C6 427 Vert
#21
I love the appeal of the "Old School" style of the '427" vert. I prefer 6 speed, no digital gauges (HUD) is sufficient, love LS7 despite all the valve guide concerns. Definitely would not trade for the C7 base vert, however the Z07 Vert who be difficult to resist from a performance standpoint, but the C7 rear end would be enough for me to pass on what would be a clearly better performing vert.

GM made 2,552 427 'verts in 2013 and there are bunch of them still around. Perhaps the market for Corvette convertibles is a bit saturated at the moment? (And here we are headed into the non-convertible half of the year.)
In fact, GM only made 621 convertibles for all of MY12, 780 for all of MY11, and only 1,003 for all of MY10. Nearly as many Vert's in all of MY10, 11, and 12 combined as they made 427 Convertibles in 2013. (And GM still made 720 MY13 non-427 Convertibles, too.) (I know a great deal on a still new MY11 GS convertible, 4LT, velocity yellow, mag ride, and manual transmission if anyone is interested, PM me.) I wonder what the short-term one, two, and three year residuals may be like given the large number of them produced.
I wonder if GM didn't make a few too many or if they didn't figure as many people holding off C6's waiting for C7's? Perhaps there is not a big market for manual transmission convertibles? One forum sponsor dealer in MI has like 17 1SC variants available. Great bargain when compared to a Z06 coupe, though. (Only made 471 of those for MY13.)

As for the notion that GM made too many, they made exactly the number that were ordered by dealerships.

I had the choice of either and chose the 427 this spring at a great discount. I have zero regrets and seriously doubt I will ever sell this car. It's been perfect out of the box and I've put 11,000 miles on it since March. I like old school and the motor is SWEET.
That said I may also add a Z07 C7 Vert when they have one. Early QC issues only serve to validate my decision, and I'm confident they will work all those out.

not the best comparison...should be vert to vert
I have a Z06 & a 427. I drove the C7 and both of my cars back to back.
The new C7 handles just as the magazine articles are claiming, just amazing. It is a leap forward over both cars. However both of my C6 Corvettes are quicker, at least they feel like they are. I didn't time anything on a track but I took all three cars through an aggressive back road-way and I was very impressed with the C7 but the other two cars felt quicker in the straight line. I am totally satisfied with my 427. When the C7 Z hi-po car comes out I will sell my Z06 and get the new Z06 but I will be keeping the 427 permanently. It has extreme character that no other car I have owned maintains. When I get out of the 427 after a cool drive it is so tough and very manly; similar to the Viper. My daily driver is a 2013 911S, it out handles all three of these cars, or better said allows you to drive it faster more relaxed. I traded my brother my 911s for his C7 for two days, the C7 makes a fantastic daily driver but not enough to make me want to get rid of the 427 to get the C7. They need to bring on the hi-po C7. The 427 is the fastest Vert ever. I will be shocked if the new C7 Vert would give the 427 a run for the money. It will need allot more Hp to do so. Just my limited opinion. You decide for yourselves.

I've driven neither, but I'll take the C7. The LT1 coupe is turning in some impressive numbers, add in all the other refinements and improvements on the C7 and I'd say its the better car, but not by much. Both are highly desirable cars and anyone who gets to own one is doing fine. If the C7 never offers a big cube NA engine like the LS7, then the 427 is going to continue to be a special car for a long time. If the c7 run includes wide body hipo 427 vert and calls it the L88, well...

As a former Z06 owner, I do not miss the uneasy feeling of potential 15k dollar engine replacement. Part of my reasoning in selling the Z a couple years back. Since then lots of sad threads in the C6Z section of engine failures.

I know that issue has been beaten to death several times, bit didn't GM fix that in the middle of the 2011 model year? I thought they acknowledged a machining error in the heads that was corrected.

Research further and you'll see that ALL years apparently have engine problems.

That's a shame. I havent followed it, bit I assume by your post that you have. LS7 Vettes are still desirable, I guess you just allow for a preemptive modification when the warranty's up, but still, it's a bummer that you have to even take it into account.

I love the front clip of the C7 (minus the fangs), but I can't see the rear end winning me over at any time. Good news is I have a 427, but I know I'll be lusting over the Z07 vert as it'll be a monster.

Thanks for the good responses so far, everybody. The spreadsheet was very informative. Unbelievable that only 10% of 427s are Torch Red.

I think this is too early to debate. I think the fair comparison would be a C7 Z51 Convertible vs. the 427 Convertible. Ironically, Chevrolet in their brochures shows 0-60 times for both of them at 3.8 sec. I would guess that the C7 Z51 Convertible would be the better car with it's more rigid frame and new technology.

Your 2010 - 2013 convertible production numbers do not include Grand Sport convertibles. There were actually 2456 non-427 convertibles built during model year 2013. For 2012, the 621 you stated becomes 2889 after adding in the Grand Sports. Likewise, 2011's 780 becomes 3562 and 2010's 1003 becomes 3338.
As for the notion that GM made too many, they made exactly the number that were ordered by dealerships.

Maybe GM didn't build any more than the dealers ordered, but maybe some dealers ordered one too many more than they thought they would be able to sell by now? I dunno, I still want one.

While I don't have a 427 Vert. I do have a Twin Turbo Widebody Vert with about 600 RWHP.
I would say that it's no comparison.
I have driven my C6 all of maybe 5 miles since I got my C7.
After logging about 1800 miles in the C7 the things I miss on my C6 is:
The open air vert feeling.
The top end twin turbo power.
The loud growing exhaust.
The "rawness" of the C6 - Stiff ride, hard clutch pedal, MGW short shifter.
My aftermarket stereo system.
Things the C7 has:
Seats! The seats are a world of a difference.
Handling
LCD info screens.
Nav
Headlights
Looks
Cargo Area
I didn't think the seats in my C6 were horrible because I just got used to it but after I got back in the C6 this weekend I was shocked at the difference.
I'm waiting for a HiPo C7 Vert.
