Default Vanity Plates: Tacky or fun?

I've never bothered with custom plates...they've always struck me as kinda silly. But with a more expensive car, it almost feels wrong to put normal license plates on it. Like the plates would be the only thing "normal" about the car while everything else is extraordinary.

So what do yall think? Are custom plates always tacky or would the extra customization actually go well with the car?

Well, they aren't called "Vanity plates" for nothing. That may give you a clue.

Not specifically related to any posts on this thread, but...

So here is the hypocrisy of some. Knocking Vanity Plates, yet fine with Aftermarket Mods, whether cosmetic, or rims etc.

I don't see how it's different, or more or less 'vain' or 'tacky'.

Ultimately, it's someone making a personal statement, and their choice should be respected, not derided.

Some of y'all crack me up. I guess anything is acceptable as long as it matches 'your' taste buds, otherwise....

I guess that explains why the vanity plate on my 64 Roadster reads "MEAN"

I don't find those plates tacky. And I often enjoy them. But I find they always steal the show. Do you want the onlooker to focus on your originality or on your car's beauty? That's what you have to ask yourself, IMO.

However, do ditch the dealership's plate holder. I can't believe how many fine cars sport those pieces of crap.

Vanity plates are fun and at times break the ice and provoke great car guy conversations. What is tacky are the chrome body mods that some put on these beautiful cars.

Some are tacky, some are fun.

My favorite was seen on a C4 convertible with the top down at the Black Hills event several years ago:
SPF 0

We went low key with ours:

I have no problem with vanity plates. But I don't see the correlation between vanity plates and after market mods. I don't do vanity plates because I can't think of anything I'd want on my plates permanently.

Personally I think the term "Vanity Plate" is a little harsh. Most of the time they are fun and unique, much like the owner(s) believe their car to be. "Personalized Plate" is a much better term. Everybody buying a C7 is proud of how they have Personalized THEIR car. So why not keep it uniform and Personalize the plate?

Mine reads LGCYZ51.

I say, personalize all you want. It's YOUR car and your choice. Who cares if people think they are tacky?

I think they are fun but I choose not to have them because some that might be jealous or just jerks might react to the plates and do something to the car.

Depending on what you get they can be a little of both.

I went low key and just went with my initials!
