Default Route 66 from NCM to California

We are picking up our new C7 in a few weeks at the Museum, if all goes as planned. We plan to tour in Kentucky and Tennessee and then pick up Route 66 for a trip back to California.

Has anyone recently done this? Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Will be making that trip FROM NCM to CA in the spring on '66. Then north and back on a Northern route probably through Denver. Will be traveling in a small convoy with a local group from here. I'm not building a garage queen but a rolling traveler with my cameras .

Historic Route 66 runs from Chicago, through Tulsa, OK, OKC, and then to Santa Monica, CA. From OKC westward, it's basically I-40 to Barstow, then state roads to the coast. I've done the I-40 part many times, and am actually in VA right now, driving to Chi-Town next week, and paralleling much of the route on my return to CA after Columbus Day weekend. If you want to see things along the way, checkout this site:

http://www.historic66.com/

Have a great time, and maybe I'll see you somewhere enroute. I'll be in a SSB Z07 tooling along at 75 MPH or so.

I've driven on parts of it(who would have figured since Springfield, MO is the birthplace of Route 66). Photo of me crossing the Devil's Elbow bridge over the Big Piney River.

I went to college at Rolla, MO and use to drive ole Rt 66 all the time before the interstates. Hard to find the old road in some places now days. You can find out most everything you want to know about it in each state from google. We did a trip with NCRS to convention in San Jose; link to photos we took west of Tulsa to CA at link:

Lots to see out west.

Get yourself a copy of EZ66 Guide for Travelers (3rd Edition) by Jerry McClanahan. It's the best way to find many parts of Route 66 that are still accessible.

Did it was great, get one of the books so you don't miss anything, some things you do not want to waste your time. A lot of museums to see and worth it, finish up at the Santa Monica Pier, there is a sign that states, End of Route 66, must have picture..and Bubba's shrimp is great...

Default Real McCoy

I 40 is not Route 66. Though they do run sometimes parallel and in the same general direction. If you are looking for the authentic run, you'll find a ton of resources searching 'Historic Route 66'. The Arizona section of road is Gallup NM to Needles CA. Route 66 AZ is dotted with cool stuff. Route 66 is the main drag of Flagstaff AZ. "Standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona such a fine sight to see" sound familiar. The restored La Posada Hotel in Winslow has a gourmet restaurant. Go figure. You'll be within spittin' distance of the Grand Canyon. Though it might be shuttered still due to the clown Congress. Check out the renovated Wigwam Motel (think teepee's). Worthy of a photo op with your new ride. Tons of refurbished gas station *** diners, ancient drive ins, etc. Antiques shops galore. And you'll no doubt run across the requisite Cookie Burns imitator along the way. It is a great ride. Old school.

I remotely support the Rolla campus bookstore's point-of-sale system from Columbia, MO as well as the other campus bookstores in the UM System. Nice to meet you!

You should be here in prime fall color time. Head east out of Bowling Green to the Great Smokey Mtns and Gattlinberg TN. Go drive the Tail of the Dragon. Then head home. You will love it.

Sounds like a great trip. Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

I live in Edmond, Oklahoma and Rt. 66 runs through Edmond. If you need anything while you are in the area PM me.:cheers

I live fairly close to the red round barn on 66 in Arcadia.

The 15 miles of Route 66 east of Oatman, AZ are fantastic!
